Good Mic with potential to be much more
The MXL990 is well made and sounds surprisingly good for the money. Many people use it as-is with adequate to very good results results. For me, it makes a solid platform for mods and upgrades. A K47 type capsule upgrade makes a huge difference. Searching the internet will reveal lots of upgrade options. It's a popular platform for upgrading and after doing two I can see why.Read full review

A real sleeper in mic values.
I recently picked up this model of Marshall's (MXL line of microphones) 990 Stereo condenser mic.
It appears to be a solid value (whether new or used) - a no frills & no nonsense design that should meet your needs for stereo recording of ensembles from vocals to instruments and maybe even favorite soundscape. Just make sure your portable recorder/mixing console has 48v phantom power (going to both mic cables!) and a very preferable shock absorbing suspension mount.
The dual condenser's angle of pickup is a fixed design- no user adjustable settings for fine tuning the separation of sources. Therefore placement of the performers will be of critical importance to optimize the stereo effect.
MXL is apparently no longer offering stereo mics, as a visit to their website shows none in their product line-up. Glad I have one of these and their other (discontinued as well) model, the V67Q. Overall, they work nicely as they seem well built & also quiet enough for the more serious minded projects. I hope this helps.Read full review

A warm vintage sound at an affordable price .
This an extremely affordable option for those looking for a large diaphram condenser mic. I use two of them as overhead mics on a vintage Gretsch drum set for jazz recordings. The mics have a very warm sound in this particular application. I have not used them for vocals or acoustic instruments, but I assume that they would deliver the same warm response.Read full review

Terrific studio mic for unbievable low price.
This is a great studio vocal recording mic. Prone to feedback of course you will have to screen it or have in seperate room from speakers/boards but awesome spectrum of perfectly clear sounding vocals high to low. Have used mics in studios that were literally 1000's times the price not much if any audible difference from this one. Also must use pop filter.Read full review

Decent Mic on the cheap.
If you are looking at a entry level large condenser studio microphone then it would be worth it to check one of these out. Especially if you can snag it for $20-$40. Keep in mind that you’ll need 48v phantom power to use it. But if you are new to recording it’s a decent mic. If you grow out of it there are mod kits you can purchase after the fact to raise the quality of the mic capsule and electronics. I’m going to have to repair a few minor cosmetic issues with this mic as I bought it used and whoever owned it prior did not take care of it. Smelled like smoke. The basket was forcibly removed at some point so I’ve had to order a new basket to replace it. And it’s possibly been dropped. All good though. I’m a resourceful fella and can get all “electronics handyman” if I need to. Read full review

MXL 990
These are great mics in their price range. I use them for both vocals and instruments, and diaphragm size allows for use in kick drums and bass instruments. Very nice high end that rarely needs attenuation when used for voice.Read full review

Good mic....works well
The mic has a couple of good settings. The focused one works real well. I like the provided shock mount. Good product

My favorite mic.
This is my favorite mic. I love the way this specific device crisps the high-end of my voice, like a well-made steak. I've been trying for months to get this kind of whispy and strong kind of tone. Nails it. I've tried a Rode Nt-1 and I wasn't really into it, but this thing, at 1/3 the price (less actually), nails it. Read full review
