Marshalltown M/T20D 20D Hand Sander with Durasoft Handle

This is an impressive tool.

It's reassuringly solid & sturdy when in your hand and has a thick aluminium base plate that doesn't flex when in use, which is faced with a dense foam backing that acts as the support to the mesh/paper when in place - so the flexibility needed when sanding comes from the foam backing rather than the tool's base plate.

The clamping system is also very effective, yet simple - the removable handle with integral sanding mesh/paper clamps at either end is held down by two threaded knobs that tighten down to the threaded spigots, attached to the base plate. These only need loosening/tightening when fitting/removing the sanding material.

Possibly the most important feature is the Durasoft handle, it's ergonomically designed to fit your hand comfortably but the softer material means that you can use the sander for long periods, without gloves and not get blisters.

I like Marshalltown tools, so this was a natural choice but I did do quite a lot of research in advance, to see if I could find anything that looked like it would be better and didn't.

These cost a bit more than the basic ones, but these are the best I've used. Works well by using industrial rolls of sandpaper and cutting the length each time. Solid Sander

This is a well made sander, probably a tad heavier than cheaper versions but the best I've used to date.
When tightening the end pieces no twisting and grips the material for sanding solid.
