A wonderful film for anyone who's ever felt out of place!

Muriel's Wedding is a classic! Muriel is the cliche unpopular girl. She's overweight, unattractive, awkward and ungainly. These traits being the least of her problems, she comes from an incredibly dysfunctional family; overweight, layabout siblings, a dad with unrealistic political career aspirations who is cheating on his wife, and their mother, a depressed, overweight, spaced-out woman on auto-pilot, walking around as if she's on another planet.

Despite these setbacks, Muriel bumps into an ex-schoolmate, Rhonda, who is attractive and confident and has a "doesn't give a damn" attitude to what people think of her. They hook up on an exotic holiday and Muriel's life takes a big turn on the up. Muriel (or "Mariel" as she later calls herself), is a huge Abba fan and her new life feels like an Abba song. She is full of hopes and dreams and with spirit that's so full of life, sets about trying to achieve the biggest one of all...her own wedding!

All the good things come crashing down when Rhonda becomes inexplicably paralysed, Muriel-Mariel realises her dad is having an affair and leaving their mother and finally, when her mother loses the plot, burns the garden and commits suicide.

It's Australian through and through, a comedy like you've never seen and heart-wrenchingly painful to watch at times because there is a little bit of Muriel in everyone - the person with insecurity and self-doubt, yearning for acceptance, popularity, love and happiness!
