An outstanding device that sets the standard in mobile computing with internet access

This product is superb. The only real issue with it is that it reboot upon just about ANY configuration change. So, for example, if you have offloading (off loading is when the device routes internet traffic via a local WiFi but without a reconfiguration of all your devices - as to save data) enabled, then when you configure it to attach to a new WiFi it will reboot. So, say for example, you are downloading a large file, and WiFi comes within range, you cannot configure the new WiFi to offload the data without interrupting the download in process. (this is a minor issue - as once setup it seems to work well and it quite stable so far. (I have pumped over 22GB in 3 days with 3 devices at once.

The processor is a bit underpowered - and the WiFi offloading is systematically limited. For example, if you enable WiFi offloading it disables the dual band wIFi and from there you only have access to the 2.4Ghz bands which are significantly more saturated resulting in lower speeds. Plus, the CPU's packet forwarding capacity is limited in transferring data from one network device to another - which this device contains 4 network devices (WiFi 5Ghz, WiFi 2.4Ghz, USB tethering, and Ethernet). The device seems to cap out at about 30mbps when routing WiFi to WiFi (such as a cell phone to the Nighthawk to a local WiFi for offloading). But this could be the limited bandwidth provided by the 2.4Ghz) I would personally like to see this become an option - when you enable WiFi offloading you can select which mode you want to use) But I also cannot see the technical reason for this. I have configured linux kernels to do routing via ipchains with command line tools and can see in my head the configuration to get both 2.4ghz and 5ghz with wifi offloading.

While this is a critical review of some features, please take away that this is an excellent device that far exceeds the capabilities of almost ANY device on the market - and it has unicorn features such as the ethernet port. Plus, Netgear has a reputation of steadfast reliable and stable devices.

I would personally recommend that Netgear start marketing this device aggressively in the trailer/motorhome marketplaces.

Average Performance, Outsized Price

I previously had a Netgear LB1120 which worked great until it didn't--suddenly it wouldn't connect to the AT&T network, even with a replacement SIM card. So I bought one of these Nighthawk units, the newest and top of the line MR1100-2A1NAS with every possible band covered. What I've noticed is the signal performance is really no better than the much cheaper (and older) LB1120. I suppose with external antennas it might outperform the old unit, and folks with great signal in a very populated area might benefit from its ability to do signal aggregation. But in semi-remote areas (we are in an RV in Arizona) it's just a more costly version of the LB1120. I don't use the battery either, so the portable capability is wasted--although I can see that it would be handy to use when mobile (the battery life is excellent).Read full review...

Netgear Nighthawk M1 MR1100 Mobile Router

Excellent product build and function! I live in a very rural area in the mountains and I'm really impressed at how well it works with WiFi range and quality of signal. I've had no problem with streaming or signal! Easily set up your user preferences, many options for use as main internet service or portable device due to remote area. I have one gripe - the unit is an overstock/refurbished unit and the battery had to be replaced because it failed to keep an all day charge like the device description claimed. So if you get a refurbished/overstocked unit get a new battery with it. Otherwise, product far surpassed my expectations. Great job Netgear!Read full review...

Recommended purchase for heavy data users...

I have tested the device with my AT&T service plan and it's been working fine. My only gripe with the device is that it can overheat easily unlike the earlier model which is the 815S. I would recommend the purchase however. I may need to unlock in the future however should I decide to change carriers someday.Read full review...

Live in Rural area this is a great hotspot

Love the MR1100 I received from Dealscaly. Yes it is more expensive than a lot of other options out there but I have tested multiple hotspots trying to find the best option for my home and this is it. Consistently getting between 70-100Mb download and between 30-70Mb upload on LTE B2 at signal strength of around -85 - -90dbi or 4 bars. The MR1100 is connected directly to my WAN port on my Asus AC1750 Router and with the AI Mesh network I’m getting consistent and fast internet throughout my 3000sq ft single story home.

I have a Wilson Pro 70 booster that was running a ZTE hotspot and was only getting 30d/12u and I’m thinking it’s because the booster is non MIMO hence the slower speeds. I have radiant barrier sheeting on my roof which blocks most radio signals so it was difficult for me to get a decent signal with any hotspot. The MR1100 without an external antenna I was getting ~ -115-119dbi signal strength. I picked up one of those cheap TS9 35dbi Gain Signal boosters and attached it to my MR1100 and received a greatly improved signal. My next test will be the 88dbi gain antenna to see if I can get an even stronger signal.

Hotspots I have tested so far.
ZTE Velocity - best for travel
Netgear Unite Explore 815S - does the job but can’t recommend.
Netgear MR1100 - ok for travel, best for stationary location like a home. Ethernet port - best option ever!

So far I have setup 6 of these for friends and family in a rural Northern California area. These people were either on Hughesnet satellite, bridged Network’s or at the end of DSL lines where max speeds were 3m down and 256k up and streaming Netflix was impossible. Everyone is ecstatic with this device and constantly tell me how happy they are with this setup.

Disclaimer. YMMV depending on the type of signal near your area. You should download an RF signal app on your phone to see what kind of dBi signal you have inside and outside your home.

Works great just wish it had a couple more options

This works great for me, I live in a rural area and was getting less than 1mbps with my century link. I got this nighthawk and hooked it up with no antenna's and was getting around 20mbps. I live 8 miles away from the closest cell tower and it is through the trees. I got a couple of cheap antennas and it more than doubled my speeds depending on the cell band it is on. I am averaging in the 40s but getting in the 90s on a specific band. That is my complaint is that you can't lock it on one band to keep the higher speeds. Also the Wifi signal is not strong I gained more speed using the night hawk as just a pass through and I am using a TP-link router for my Wifi.Read full review...

Great Cellular Router

For the use for about a week, the unit appears solid, with good internet connectivity. The unlocked unit has no problem on taking a Google Fi data SIM right away as well. Though it is tricky to use an AT&T MVNO SIM. I need to manually add a new APN setting for the MVNO for it to work.

The back cover holds to the unit tight. Though sometimes it is very hard to slide open it the normal way and I need to use my fingernails to very hard push at the edge to open it.

The larger battery appears able to last just about a day on light usage with a few hours of device connecting to its wifi and mostly idle.

Somewhat Future Proof but HIGH PRICE

I was fortunate to find this under $185 so that would be a better range for this device. It's somewhat future proof on AT&T network in that it will get the max of 4g LTE technology that's available in your area now & in the future nationwide. The "5G Evolution" is just sales hype it's not 5G capable but rather the fastest 4G LTE Speeds evolving with better technology. This device, as far as I know, will not work on 5G. However, 5G networks are going to start rolling out in 2019' & the whole, nationwide, roll-out will take several more years. By that time you'll, most likely, need a new device to get the latest frequency bands &, consequently, 5G LTE speeds. Ah, The joys of cellular evolution keeping us all on our toes.

it has been running for (edit: 6 month now), 24/7, for me & I've heard others that are running this device solely for several months now w/no issues. There is no touch screen & everything is managed through attwifimanager domain on a computer browser or phone app. I had one firmware upgrade available after I received it & went perfect. Speaking of which the firmware upgrades I know there was some trouble people were complaining about refering the the ethernet port. It didn't work like a traditional ethernet port. However, I'm using the ethernet port to give a wifi router an internet connection & it works perfect! I think AT&T's original intent was for "data offloading" to another isp provider but I'm glad they changed that.

The wifi range is not bad & probably one of the best but if your use to a decent AC wireless home router than this is not going to get the range of those routers (no external antenna's). It's the wireless range that limits this device but this is acceptable considering It's intended to be a mobile device. If it's set up for your home base then consider getting a home wifi router or range extender that will strengthen the range. Even with the range limitation I was still able to play 1080P video's online from 25 ft away so it's not a bad machine at all. Time will tell how long it will last.

Bottom Line: This is a great unit but if you want to save a boat load of cash & don't need the Ethernet port I recommend getting the AT&T Unite Explore NOT the Pro as it didn't give me the speeds as the Explore did. In MY area the Unite Explore gave me the exact same speeds as the NightHawk. If you can wait until the price comes down on these NightHawks to save some cash the Explore does a fantastic job if you don't need the Ethernet port.

Second Time Around

The unit provides WIFI while utilizing cell signals which provides us with internet service that we do not otherwise have at our geographical location. It is or was not designed for 24 hrs. a day, every day service and has a couple of short comings. The unit will go to a shut down mode if the battery gets warm from being on the charger too long after charging which means you can't just plug it in and forget it for continued operation. You can hook up a higher rate charger and leave it plugged while removing the battery and it will continue to operate. Unless you have a battery backup device to route the charger through, you will lose connectivity with a loss of power. For normal portable and or traveling use the unit is great and provides great flexibility. You will need to be conscious of data usage since it will increase data usage and costs for the data. This unit was purchased to replace a same older unit that we had which failed and in our research did not find a better or equal unit to it. This unit has been discontinued by the manufacturer and remaining new ones and remanufactured ones are expensive. Read full review...
