Just wait til you see what they do next year!

The game, while it captures the essense of being a head coach from the management perspective, seems to have lost its focus on the fact that it is a game, it should be fun.
At times it seems more like a simulator that head coaches may use to hone their skills, as opposed to something that is tweaked for enhanced gameplay. Imagine a war game where sometimes you go on patrol and don't find anything of interest. You just walk around for 2 hours. That is how HC seems at times.
Don't get me wrong, the concept is great and the actual gameplay does warrant a 3/5, but there is definately room for improvement. I think that those people who would be drawn to a game where you play as a coach will be excited and yet be looking forward to what comes next year. People who are drawn to games like MAdden for the action, stay back. This is more MS Flight Simulator, then Falcon 2.0.

Recommended for anyone who fantasizes about being an NFL Head Coach!

NFL Head Coach was the most in-depth coaching experience of it's day...2006. In order to maximize the potential of this game you do have to spend a significant amount of time mastering the nuances of the game. For instance, every coach's dream is to be selected as the greatest coach of all time. How do you achieve that in this game?

1. Win.
2. Develop your coaching staff into head coaches themselves.

What I loved about the game is the cut-scene videos whenever you achieved some milestone; like first win, selected as coach of the year, first number one draft pick.

What was really tedious was the day-to day selection of your training plan AND having to go through the actual practice. This is IMPORTANT to do though, because when you start out, you are limited to two training events per day. If you sim through any of the practices, your players may or may not improve, and you'll never get more efficient as a coach. If, however, you go through every practice, every week during the first season, you'll get THREE Practices a day during your second season!!! Now you have a competitve advantage. More practices means greater player and Team development. You want 100% understanding of the plays in your play book.

Coach development:
When you are hired as a head coach you are given a staff to train in their current positions, or swap their positions (defensive line coach to secondary coach, for example). You may also fire them and select coaches from the free agent pool. (interview each one to find one that fits your philosophy).

After 17+ seasons of playing, non of my coaches were ever selected as a Head Coach, but I know other players who did. No one could tell me what they did different, though. I'd praise or chastize each coach, which either boosts their ability, makes them happy, or pisses them off. In order to maximize their potential, I kept reloading the game and trying a different response until they improved. THAT is another way this game got tedious.

Still, it was sooooo fun to play this game, having three undefeated seasons, five straight Superbowl Wins, and I ultimately ended up in the Coaching Hall of Fame as the #1 Coach of All Time, even beating legends like Paul Brown, and Dan Shula. Overall I'd recommend this game to anyone who likes character development, and wants a different kind of football experience.

If you're into awesome game day experiences like in EA Sports' Madden Football, this is not the game for you.

Great concept, but too slow and sluggish

I have only owned this game for two weeks before I sold it here on eBay. I didn’t have much time to play and it was just way to time consuming for me. But for the couple of times that I’ve played it, I thought it was just too sluggish, which made the game very frustrating.

This game has a great concept, but I felt that it should’ve taken its queue from the Madden games’ dynasty mode or owner mode. The restraint of having three moves per day was just too frustrating. Some days I needed to make more than three moves, and others I needed less. This is especially frustrating during free agency where you’d like to tend more offer sheets than is allowed.

As for the maintenance of your roster, there were just too many menus you’d have to go through just to access them. Ditto for the play books; actually, for everything else.

As for the game play, what else can be said about it? You are the coach and you let the players make plays while you call out the plays and motivate your players. Maybe this is the only positive the game offers.

Overall, I give it 2 stars.

Next time, please take out the restraints. That’ll allow the game to flow and make it much more interesting.

Head Coach gives you a chance to run all aspects of a footbal team!

This game gives a realistic view of a Head Coach, not to mention the General Manager! Game day action is great! You do have to put in some work, though! You are given the oppertunity to practice, which I suggest you do if you want to be succesful! The practice is to enhance players status for that week! Your options on what you practice is your choice and choose well if you want to win! You can grow as a Head Coach as you learn how to set up your practices! There is also the dynamics of dealing with the coordinators and assistance coaches! They can be helpful or a real pain! Still may favorite of Head Coach is the off-season! You become the General Manager and will need to negotiate contracts, sign Free Agents, trade players scout and draft new players! You will need to fit all these actions into your salary cap! So, if you really love the business of football there is a great chance you will love Head Coach, but be ready to commit some time to this "game" and have fun "playing"!Read full review...

NFL Head Coach (EA Games)

It's not too bad. A little slow at times. Good graphics. Game needs to be more helpful in some spots, but, for the most part, it is what I expected. I enjoy the trading and drafting scenes. Not a huge fan of the play selection scenes as of now, but once I get used to the game a little bit more, it may grow on me. Overall, a good game.Read full review...

NFL Coach better have alot of time

Its a nice game but you better have alot of time if you gona play it.I have played 8 hour and have just made my first draft. I realy hate the draft why does every computer team have to have 45 sec to pick there players. but all and all its a ok game but only for the hard core fan of the game of football. If you are not a hard core fan buy another game.Read full review...

Not So Hot

This game is really boring. I dont think EA sports needed to make a whole game out of being a head coach, it should have been added to Madden. I actually think the Super Star mode of Madden would have made a better game. The game isnt so bad but it gets very boring after a while.Read full review...
