"A peach of a camera" when reviewed when new and still a gleaming gem.

I originally bought a Nikon coolpix 5600 some five years ago as my first venture into digital photography. I found the camera easy to use producing pictures of amazingly good quality. Incredibly good for for any camera let alone such a small one. Unfortunately, I placed the camera without the protection of its case in a coat pocket and managed to damage the screen when the coat pocket hit a table corner. Enquiries re. a replacement screen turned up repair estimates of around £80. Since I'd got to know the camera so well and was more than satisfied with its performance, I sought a replacement. And since the price on eBay was less than £20 (including postage), I decided to buy another two Nikon Coolpix 5600 as well - one for my eldest son and another for my partner. This is because I know how everything works in this little gem and would be able to help them out oif any help was required. I'm grateful to the vendors that all three cameras were aas described and in excellent condition - one even arrived with a 2GB memory card and another in its original box complete with Guide Book and all supplied extras. I originally bought the now defunct camera after reading a review which summarized the Nikon Coolpix 5600 as "A peach of a camera". Despite the advances in miniturisation and the inclusion of "Advanced" features and large zooms on many modern cameras, I think it's one of the best little cameras I'm ever likely to own.Read full review...

Nikon E5600

Great little camera, pocketable, with a resonable size screen.Big plus, it has a view finder too. (coupled to the zoom lens). Very, very, easy to use in all modes. Great snow scene program, proved itself over the past few weeks. It uses AA batteries so they can be purchased anywhere. I can not praise this little gem highly enough.Read full review...

Coolpix 5600 - Good budget choice

Pros: Compact, useful features like D-Lighting and automatic red-eye reduction, loads of useful scene modes, generally good picture quality, optical viewfinder comes in handy; takes 2 readily-available 'AA' batteries.

Cons: Slow flash recharge time, bit slow starting up, certain pictures have quite a lot of digital 'noise', no autofocus assist lamp.

Though this camera's a few years old now, it's still not a bad one! It has some useful extras like D-Lighting, a one touch in-camera fix for underexposed areas or difficult backlighting situations, and auto-red eye reduction which seems to work well. The camera also has a load of useful scene modes like sports, landscape, portrait, fireworks, indoor and even an underwater mode for use with the separately available underwater casing. Picture quality is very good, especially outdoors. The 5600 also has an optical viewfinder, a rarity on new compact digitals. This may be a bit small but is ideal when using the continuous shot mode for keeping a subject in frame, or lining the next shot up whilst the flash is recharging and the LCD goes blank (more on that below). The camera also takes 'AA' batteries, so if you get caught short whilst out and about, you can easily and cheaply get some more and keep shooting. I use rechargeables which last ages.

Where it does fall down slightly is picture quality indoors/in low light. As I read on another review and confirmed by my testing, the camera 'cheats' when you take a flash photo towards the limit of the flash range - it increases the ISO (light) sensitivity (and therefore noise - graininess in a photo) to increase the flash range. Also, the lack of an autofocus assist lamp means that in lower light conditions the camera struggles, and can fail to focus properly, either meaning a few attempts to focus or it failing altogether. It defaults to 'infinity' focussing though so at least subjects more than a couple of meters away will still be in focus. The flash also takes a good few seconds to recharge, during which the LCD will go blank, very frustrating when you want to take another photo or line another one up! At least you have the optical viewfinder to use if required though.

The Coolpix 5600 is still an very good little camera despite a few shortfalls, 5mp is plenty for most people and allows for A4 or even A3 prints, and it's relatively small size means it's a very good 'go-anywhere' camera.

Excellent quality with good PTP / Pictbridge support

The reason why I bought this camera is because it includes a decent implementation of the PTP / Pictbridge protocol. I need that for a special application in which I must shoot pictures automatically from a computer using the USB cable. While most cameras include PTP support, only a handful actually allow you to shoot or change the focal length via software.

Other than that, the camera is very compact and produces sharp images with reduced color noise in the shadows. It definitely exceeds my expectations for a pocket camera, it is very small and is well worth the money.

For my application, an external power connector would have been nice, but then I'm being too picky.

I would definitely recommend this camera to anyone looking for an inexpensive point and shoot camera. No manual settings, just point and shoot and it will even warn you if the image is blurry.

Nikon 5600

Needed to replace my Nikon 5600 due to mark on lense so bought a second hand one. Reason for keeping same camera is I dive and already have the underwater housing for this model. Even though there are much better cameras with additional features (face recognition etc) this is a great little digital camera.Read full review...

nikon coolpix 5600 digital camera

This camera was about two years younger than my previous model. It takes cracking pictures and is straightforward to use with an excellent user manual. Whilst it has less features than the most modern version, I don't care. These are all icing on the cake. Too much icing for me, as I would never remember everything.

Recommended buy secondhand.

I already had the Coolpix 4600 but it did not have sound with the movies. So I was happy to buy a used,as new,5600.It was indeed as new and, like the Coolpix 4600,gives great results with a good printer.I have learned over the years that a good printer is far more important than huge megapixels for the best results.A great secondhand buy.Read full review...

Great camera. Great qualify pics

I love the Nikon Coolpix 5600.
This is the second coolpix 5600 I buy on Ebay.
The first one I bought a year ago and takes great pictures, so now I bought a second one to give to my sister who asked me for a camera.
I like it so much that I chose to buy this second hand camera instead of buying a non name camera from Tesco for the same price.
I think the camera has great quality pics, small enough to carry in your pocket without a case, or hold in your hand with a carry case.
I take my camera everywhere to take pictures and am very pleased with it.
