Good camera with 320,000 shutter counts

Camera in good working order. Is not a five star because it has 320,000 shutter counts and that should have been advertised in the selling page.

Top quality machine, joy to use and with a good working life left in it.

Buying the D2X was a backward step in some technological regards from the D7000 I purchased last year. I had been having some serious issues with the new body, the exposure can be wildly out in some extreme lighting situations, this is a know Nikon D7000 issue but not one that is across the board of users, I'm one of the unlucky ones it seems. I also had issues with the many different autofocus options, I shot so much soft rubbish that I began to doubt myself.
Hence I went backwards to the not so ancient PRO spec D2X.
I checked out the shutter count and found the model I was looking at on ebay was astonishingly low, just 7000 shutter actuations that Nikon have suggested will be good for 200,000 -300,000 firings. A good start, but maybe I should have questioned why it was a bit underused after costing the owner about £2000...
When I began to use it you are forced to admire the solid, solid build, that sits great in your grip, you know you are using a real camera and all the buttons are Nikon standard positions that I was used to after a lifetimes use of them. I'm sure veterans of other models would find them easy and logical to use.
The D2X is unfussy, it is simply designed to be effective in a photojournalist environment more than anywhere else, notably in low light when a journalist would have a flash attached as a matter of course. My biggest concern with the D2X is with its fairly ancient, clumsy ability to really shoot at a higher ISO than 400. The grain is harsh above this low number. The D7000 was excellent up to about 1600....
Back to the real D2X plus points. The autofocus settings are a dream, simple, varied to cover all the situations I need and easy to operate change with a thumb click. I shoot sharp now all the time which if you consider very important in my work where I do get paid by clients for my pictures in the various photographic commissions that I undertake as a fairly underpaid professional who cant afford a D3X at the moment!
The D2X, and buying old digital tech is not without a certain degree of risk that goes hand in hand with an excellent camera that I can rely on and also reflects my professional aspirations.Even the most thorough research into a product and seller wont take into account just how long your new 2nd hand camera will last, nor how nervous you will feel if little electrical problems begin to rear their heads and you realise what a lonely place it can be without an extended warranty....Personally I've noticed the autofocus stop seeking focus a few times, it worries me but I can live with it if I can understand how to deal with it. I can get things on again by simply turning the power off and then back on. Its not perfect but I can cope.
Its a tough call to fully endorse the idea of buying older digital tech. I needed a pro camera I could trust and I took a chance on a model that could do the job and would cost me a full zero less than the price of a new Nikon which weighs in at an eye watering £5000.
I'm keeping my fingers crossed the electrics aren't going to bother me more than they do on occasion now. If they do I shall pray its a simple switch/button fix.
When it comes to the Nikon itself I have nothing but respect for its quality build and no-nonsense, no fluffy bits operation. I can easily just do what I need to do, and compose good images that I am sure will be fine, sharp and correctly exposed when I upload them for use. I couldn't say that of the new D7000. Caveat emptor -Buyer beware!

Pro photographer A Must Buy A Great Product In A Name You Can Trust Great

The reason purchasing the Nikon D2X was for modeling photography once the flagship of the Nikon range. A solid made camera that is a heafty model but built to last. a solid camera that would take a knock and still work. so well made, image quality what you would expect from 12.1 mp camera colours are amazing the camera is simple to use. I like the fact that the battery manages at least 500 shots before battery shows that it still had enough room to take further shots before battery goes flat. i think that it's par with canon at the time. I am very happy with Nikon D2X any my only gripe is that this is a heavy camera over 2 pound in weight. In a nut shell a cracker of a camera and if you are looking for good second user buy this is the one to buy.Read full review...

A Few Generations Old But One Stellar Performer

An ideal back-up to a newer generation camera. These are over 13 years old now but most still keep on going. 12.4 MP don't seem like much, but it's still more than 4k video. Heck, Nikon apparently used to say "12 megapixels is enough for anyone." Of course, they said this before they brought out the D3x but for printing anything less than A3 size, 12mp is more than enough. The quality is inferior to say, the 12mp Sony A7s but it is nearly a decade older.

The D1, and D2 have both had their day, but the D2x is still quite a capable machine, and provided the limited ISO is handled well, it delivers good results. I have the D2x paired with a D5300 as a dual back-up to a D3x. In all fairness, the D5300 image quality is better and mush more capable of being used in low light. But the D2x strengths are in it's ruggedness and reliability. One can take a D2x out in conditions that would destroy a lesser built model. And, one does not have to mention the D5300's poor battery life.

These are built just like the other single digit D series. Tough enough to take a knock but still keep going.

For a beginner used to say the D5300 or similar, the D2x is quite a step to operate - so many buttons but by there being no real full auto mode, it forces the user to get to know the controls.

Here's one potential stick compared to newer models, there is no video but what would one get if there was? At best 480p.

The batteries do age much faster than the camera and they don't go down in price.

A professional camera for a second hand amateur model price

I began with a Nikon D1X but disliked the short battery life of the Nickel-Metal-
Hydride type plus the small, poor resolution screen on the back. You checked the shot and it looked poor, card out and into the card reader and you’ve taken a good shot. Gave my two bodies and a lens to a guy I was at uni with and bought a D2X what a difference. (The guy from uni days is now doing weddings with my two D1X etc).
The batteries and screen of the D2X are far superior. I’ve now invested in serious glass for my D2X and am searching for a second body. At the price they’re currently commanding they’re a bargain. The 12.4 mpx sensor is good enough for anything. I seek out low shutter counts, my D2X has just over 20,000 shots. 10% of the expected life. These cameras are heavy, but, like the Leicaflex trio and the Leica R8/9 they are built to the highest standards. I’ve bought the Nikon 24-70mm f2.8 AFS ED G and 80-200mm f2.8 AFS G lenses for my D2X so need a second body, one for each lens. The full-frame D3 is an attractive buy but, the ones I’ve seen are £500-800 with 200,00 plus shots taken. A much better buy is a D2X with 20,000 shots at £199.00 plus postage.

Awesome camera, don't waste your money on new

I was looking for an upgrade to my existing deigital SLR camera, a Fuji S2 pro also bought from here. The Fuji uses Nikon lenses and kit so I was looking for either a Nion or newer Fuji camera. After a bit of searching and reading up on various models and checking prices what was available and in my price range was limited. The D2x is a fantastic camera, with it having the portrait grip and features like time lapse built in it has features that you would have to buy add ons for in other cameras. The Nikon Pro build quailty is beyond belief I have stated that it feels like it was built in the same production line as the terminator. The layout resembles the Fuji S2 pro in that as well as a great menu system a lot can be done by the command dials and external buttons, after a bit of use you change alter a lot of functions without having to take the camera from your eye and miss THE shot. For those of a smaller stature this camera might be a little large and heavy, for me its ideal, I have a proper handful of heavy well balanced camera allowing me to keep a solid grip. The only other thing that might happen is that you find your memory card suddenly fills up, unexpectedly, this is due to the burst rate of this phenomenal camera 5-8 frames a second depending on mode it beyond belief and where I have shot between 700 and 1000 pics at a one day festival with the old fuji I managed 800 at an evening gig without trying, so I recommend an 8Gb CF card or better, battery life looks amazing as well, after 800 pics the charge meter hadn't moved off full and it is very accurate, still allowing you to shoot when down on the last bar. Brilliant camera and lots of used items available for very good prices on Ebay. Brilliant camera.

Update, after many thousands of shots, damp conditions, rain, cold, sleet and everythign else the camera is still going very strong. Excellent.

A very happy bunny, a great bit of kit and good value for money!!!!!

I always wanted a D2X but only now could I afford one s/h £590.It's a beast of a thing heavy and built like a tank.Being old school I like things to feel engineered and made of metal. This is my third Nikon camera and all my equipment/lens can be used. The condition of my purchase was better than E-bay posting and is fault free to date.Have I been lucky during my photography hobby over the last 35 years having purchased 12 cameras in that time with only 2 being new.Buy the best make you can afford and read the manual but learn by taking photos, there are so many things this camera can do I'm sure I will never master them all,but I have fun finding out.No dislikes and I can't compare as there is only one D2X.Read full review...

still an awesome camera even after 6 years

This was nikons flagship camera in 2004-6 still an amazing camera and is now very cheap compared to its original £3500 price tag
you get a lot of camera for your money and it does everything you ever need ,and nearly all nikon lenses will fit on and work
new cameras have better sensors with higher iso but this is still an awsome camera , i took a D2h to africa for 3 months and it survived all the dust and living in a truck pro build quality at its best
