Awesome little lens.
As I had my FX camera body covered at zoom ranges, I wanted a collection of fast primes to cover the nearer focal lengths. I had 35mm and 50mm but wanted something a bit closer so opted for this. I originally wasn't expecting anything particularly sharp as I had read a number of reviews including the Ken Rockwell offering. I had already learn't to be wary of some of his reviews having had my fingers and wallet burned a number of times. I'm thinking in particular of his review of the Nikon D7000 series, where no mention is made of this series of cameras focusing inaccuracies! It even plagues the D7100 which has been highly recommended by virtually everyone.
So I approached this lens with an open mind, firstly I tried on my D700 as a landscape lens, stopped down to about F8 or so and was blown away with the results, sharp all over! Then used in low light conditions on my DX bodies as it equates to about 40mm and found it great even wide open. To me it just shows that reviews should be treated with caution, even supposedly independent reviewers. Being extremely light and compact, I just put in my pocket and carry all day in case I need to something fast and wide.

Nikon 50mm f1.8D lens
Nikon calls this the Nikon AF Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 D.
I bought this lens for its speed of focus, its sharp images and the ability to work in low light levels. It is quite cheap in comparison with other Nikon lenses. I have a Nikon D700 and this lens is relatively light (5½ ounces) which makes it a lighter load to hump about.
The lens is not a (G) type lens so you are able to choose any f stop number rather than rely on than your camera. It is a full-frame lens, compatible with any Nikon SLR and the picture quality is superb.
Why did I buy it when I have a Nikon zoom covering this focal length? Ease of carrying it around and image quality are the answer. Of course, if money were no object I might well have preferred the 50mm f1.4 but this cheaper lens is still great value since you can buy this lens new for £100 or thereabouts.Read full review...
An everyday lens
This is one of four prime Nikkor lenses I own and like the others it is a fine lens. Distortion is low, the lens is sharp and colour saturation is excellent. A very useful walkabout lens. You don't know what quality you're missing until you use a prime lens instead of a zoom.Read full review...
Nice little lens
Nice little lens, sharpish and versatile, good addition for the D800.

A superb lens BUT do make sure you get the AIS version. The others are not as good. You can check by serial number on Roland Vinks website

Excellent, solid, fast lens that works on D7000
Superb, solid lens. Works beautifully on my Nikon D7000. A different and superior feel to the kit lenses that I've been used to.
Superb
Couldn't be happier with it. The barrel is plastic but it is really good plastic. Optically it's as good as it can be, in terms of the time when this lens has been produced.
