Excellent Travel Lens with Excellent Vibration Reduction.

Light-weight lens ideal for travel. Not bulky compared to other zooms. Body is tough with a metal lens mount. Auto-focus hunts a little in low light condition, i.e. in dimly lighted rooms with lens aimed on a light colored-wall, thus, the 4-stars (or 4.5 stars). Otherwise, it is of great value, and the VR is a plus especially for night shots. I have taken sharp photos, hand-held, at 1/4s with VR on. Manual focus is great with very good damping. This lens replaces my previous light-weight travel lenses (28-200G 3.5-5.6D and 28-70/3.5-4.5D). Lens balances well with lightweight or professional bodies. I did not miss focal length in excess of 85mm. I switched to DX if I need anything longer than 85mm. The 24mm is a big plus for narrow streets, and other tight spots. Photos are sharp, with brilliant colors.Read full review

Great optics, not so great image stabilization durability on my used lens copy

The VR electronics on a used lens seems to deteriorate over time as in the case of this lens. For every single picture taken with VR on, they came out a little bit soft. Granted, it was only noticeable when fully zoomed in. However, turning VR off under the same conditions even hand held pictures always came out sharp as a tack. The only instance when I used VR was whenever hand holding and the shutter speed was too slow that camera shake would introduce even more blur or softness.Read full review

wonderful light weight lens

I bought this lens as used excellent condition for good price for my full frame Nikon D610 camera .
I think it is great lens for daily photography of portrait street landscape and cityscape as it could be considered as all in one lens for travel photography duo to its lightweight and good built .
This lens is fast , sharp and accurate in focusing with a privilege of VR .
The main drawbacks for me were related to distortions at the both ends 24mm and 85mm
I think this lens is must for any enthusiastic photographer and I highly recommend having it among other specialized expensive lenses

"Used" 24~85 Nikkor ∱3.5~4.5 G ED VR

Nikkor optic, sharp thru entire zoom range. Attached shot was hand-held at 65mm, 1/200th sec. and ∱7.1 with a crop-sensor D7500 in "auto" mode. Full frame reduced in size for posting here.

Lens is unobtrusive as a "walkabout" one as well.Read full review

This ain't a scalpel... this is a Swiss Army knife.

I bought this lens as a replacement for my 24-70. At first I was skeptical about it, especially since there are so many people that say this "isn't sharp". To my surprise this lens is very sharp! Yes it is a bit soft in the corners but nothing that you should be concerned about. If you are willing to pay 2x more go for the 24-70, but you honestly won't be getting much more... Trust me I owned it.

The best photographers in the world don't care about absolute sharpness, and you should be using primers and not zooms if you do photography professionally. This lens is amazing in its own spectrum. Personally I find the extra 15mm much handier for walking around, and the macro feature is an incredible tool to have available. If you want better results for macro or 1:1 reproduction then you should get a macro lens.

I only gave it 4 stars because my complaint is that the zoom ring sticks... Construction overall is not like other D series lenses with metal and very precise controls. This is mostly plastic and the zoom feel is not there because it isn't smooth.

This is my walk around/travel lens. It doesn't disappoint me. I'll carry this and a prime telephoto like my 135 DC or 180mm 2.8. If I travel I take this and a 50 1.8 for low light and a 105 ai-s for reach. Buy it!

Size and weight matters.

This may not be the sharpest of my lenses, but I love its small size and weight. Starting at 24mm is important for some true wide-angle work and so with 85mm at the long end we have a very usable range in a single lens. There are times when carrying more lenses or lens changes is just too much to deal with. This lens being small and light while offering a great range of focal lengths, while giving respectable image quality, make it a nice one.Read full review

one lens does almost all

If you enjoy a lens that can get you a shot from almost any situation, this is the only lens you need to carry. The images are sharp and good contrast, the VR allows lower shutter speeds and the zoom range is a delight. Well worth the money! ps it also is a great lens on your dx camera.Read full review

Great, light, affordable optic for travel and grab shots.

A fine performing lens for the price. Images are sharp when stopped down between f/5.6 and f/11. It does distort a bit at both wide and telephoto positions, but it is easily corrected in Lightroom or Photoshop.Read full review

First DSLR body and lens;

Being my first DSLR experience, I am still getting used to my lens; however, the basics seem to be intact; focus and zoom rings rotate smoothly; no dust, etc internally; no scratches, dents, or marks anywhere; seems like a new lens, to me; a bit heavy for my Nikon D7000, making it a bit front-weighted; not a problem that some use won't minimize/eliminate. Overall very happy.Read full review
