Be aware you'll need the instructions it's complex

Slightly better than the Pioneer VSX-915 7.1 I've purchased the onkyo isn't a model I could use without reading the instructions .nice clicky buttons and genuinely not a hot running Amp so can safely be stacked in a decent set up Read full review...

Feature heavy, aged, possibly dificult to setup though quite functional

Contemporary reviews held this unit in high regard, even later reviews advise it could hold its own against the marketplace except for some missing features other brands were shipping.
However, this 506 unit *does not* extract audio from the HDMI; the 576 apparently can. You either have to utilise 6x Phono analogue connections for the 5.1 channels or S/PDIF optical or coaxial to get surround audio into it.
Good points are the 7.1 (twin rear) or 5.1 with option for the additional two channels for bi-amping the main stereo front speakers. It has has powerful 130w amplifiers into 6ohms, supports Dolby and DTS surround formats typically found on DVDs and HD digital TV channels. It also allows the use of banana plugs, or otherwise screw down terminals. The .1 channel is analogue phono out into a separate powered speaker.
The unit has so many functions it could be frustrating to setup and more so to use if you want to switch between audio sources. But if you just leave it connected to the TV and pipe all audio through that then the setup can be left and is retained when powered off and on again.
For example, my setup is an XBOX 360 running a video streaming service (Amazon or Netflix) with 5.1 audio, through a (5+ year old) Panasonic TV then out through optical and produces surround audio.
I am using mine with the Yamaha NS-x51 set of 5.0 speakers and a Philips powered sub for .1 - quite a mismatch, yet it works!
The manual is very detailed and explains all you need to know, unfortunately eBay will not allow the direct link to be posted, so search for: "tx-sr506_576_manual_e" on Onkyo's International website.

the sound is crisp and very clear, the bass is very impressive. I bought it just as a home surround amp for music and films and its perfect. More than powerful enough and plenty of features excellent amp for the money.Read full review...

Excellent machine, broken though

Great machine, the audessey is the best part - calibrates your speakers perfectly for surround sound using a supplied mic.

The machine i bought had a fault which meant we couldn't use one of the surround channels.Read full review...
