Onkyo gets its entrance to the DAP world mostly right ...

Understand that mentally I am comparing this to the other daps i have owned ... the cowon plenue 1 and the sony nw zx2. The one you will find the best will depend upon various quirks of the intrument as opposed to overall sound quality. The Onkyo definitely sounds GREAT. The twin dac isolation makes for excellent sound. One of the few quirks that isn't a plus, as far as the Onkyo goes, is that you cannot (at least I haven't figured out how) delete albums from the device itself, but must be plugged into your desktop. That is annoying. While all three have proprietary "gadgets" that tweak the sound, it is really just a matter of taste. I will say that the Sony is the worst of the three in this. The Cowon has the most tweaks available, but the Onkyo holds its own. it upscales to 192 kHz ... it has a DSP function ... a digital filter ... and an eleven band eq which can be manipulated so many ways as to get a little frustrating (you must have a steady hand because you can go up/down AND side to side in the manipulations). But make no mistake: it sounds as good as any device I have used. Whether listening to the "balanced" out thru headphones, or through the bluetooth connection to my car stereo, my music sounds rich, warm, excellent. One bonus that cannot be overlooked (if you like as much music as you can "take with you") is the DOUBLE micro sd card slot ... I have two 256g cards in there, which equals 476 gigs of music. It seems to show artwork if it is attached to the folder, something the Sony doesn't do so well either, though the Cowon does a great job of that. The main drawback of the Cowon is that it isn't bluetooth capable. too bad. Anyway, I realize you came here looking for info on the Onkyo, and I can wholeheartedly recommend it ... oh, and depending on where you shop, you can get it two to four hundred dollars cheaper than either of the other two!Read full review...

Onkyo DP-X1

Personally never heard of Onkyo. But after Purchasing this DAP ... Doors open, mind swapped. Try iT. For sound is hard to describe, i have a few dap of one of most expensive brand. This Onkyo just a bit lower but 50% cheaper. And may say even better on bass and stage thus dynamic ( obviously depend on taste and kind of music) this is for POP, commercial, Trap, EDM, to those track which are bass and dynamic rich After a line perceive sound quality will get harder. So yes is a must have DAP. I will stick to it for a long while. :-)Read full review...

ONKYO DP-X1

The absolute best sound in any Digital Audio Player on the market today. The ambience of having your own personal concert hall in the palm of your hand is an amazing experience that should be enjoyed by any music lover. My recommendation is to purchase your DP-X1 directly through a reputable eBay seller preferably in the Asian Market for lower prices (domestically it sells for $200-400 CDN more in Canada). My only disappointment is that I wasted all those years listening to a crappy smart phone / MP3 player. After buying a Onkyo DP-X, I caught myself smiling ALL day long.Read full review...

Excellent analogical sound

Amazing sound. Love everything about this device except for the 8hrs battery and the sharp square form factor (bad for pocket use) overall a great piece of sound equipment. The EQ is so intuitive and effective. If you look mainly for SQ you can't go wrong with this unit.Read full review...

Beautiful Sound

This thing sounds AMAZING and has so many features missing in more expensive or similar products. Everything is near perfect. The only two things I've noticed that aren't that great:

Battery life doesn't seem to be as advertised. I get around 4-6 hours battery with standalone mode, which is supposed to do 10+??

XDAPLINK is terrible interface software. Really poor for such a good device. Won't go into detail, but if you use it you'll see what I'm talking about. Can't move music onto the device the way I want.

No fast charging.... :(

In the Onkyo player, there is no category "recently added" or "recently played". It has every other category you'd want. Making playlists is a bit of a pain.

But other than that, it seems to be the perfect player. Still 5/5 stars deserving.

All in a DAP

Boasts of a nice design, rich sound & memory possibility, all in a dap ! Obvious cons are those terrible sharp edges, poor onkyo apps and a very weak battery life !

Sound was authentic

The music sound good with the equalizer playing in the back ground, overall not a bad buy,but the battery could last longer when using Wi-Fi.

Using balanced headphone output with high-res Tidal and AKG 701's (modified with 2.5 mm trrs) is a total thing of beauty. Fabulous clarity and control.
