If it's something you need...
Have an old Xbox lying around, and a old TV that needs a DVD player? This kit will let you get some extra use out of your retired game system. With the DVD playback kit in place it's just as easy to use as a standard DVD player, and loads discs more quickly than most players do.
The Xbox does not have an HDMI output, so it's not what you need if you're trying to hook up a newer TV. On the other hand it has S-Video and component outputs, so it will serve better with higher end older TVs than a new DVD player will. (The few DVD players that are still in production lack those outputs.) And a new Blu-Ray player has no analog video outputs at all so it won't work with those older TVs.Read full review

Great Remote
When I got an extra TV, I figured it's time to finally turn the XBox into a DVD player.
While I had to press certain buttons a second time to work, possibly due to the remote not being in range/line of sight, it still works great. Works in any of the four ports. Also, it seems to have every possible feature a DVD player could have (Angle, Zoom up to x10, A-B, etc.) through the display button. Probably the best DVD player in my house.
I never had to use the number buttons that much on any DVD remote so they seem to be in the way, if anything. They could have really made those buttons smaller since they are probably the least important buttons. And the words and numbers on the remote could have been made bigger and/or brighter.
But for under $10 used (including shipping), you can't go wrong.Read full review

Get the most out of the original Xbox
Microsoft would have had to pay royalties on each Xbox to display the "DVD" logo. So, being cheap, they shipped without the logo and without a DVD controller. The cost was then passed on to the consumers who actually wanted to use Xbox as a DVD player. You had to buy a controller and a dongle that plugged into one of the controller ports. It works great!Read full review
