Excellent product

I needed a quick replacement for my previous camcorder following a theft. This camcorder, whilst not quite up to the previous specs was a good replacement. It recorded the live European Grand Prix in Valencia Spain with great picture quality and the sound was also very good. I know that technology has progressed but I needed a camcorder that would allow me to access the previously recorded Hi8 tapes that I had already recorded as well. Amazing Product

Bought this Camcorder as a replacement for the same model which has a screen which no longer
works. Have used the original on holidays around the world for many years and cannot be faulted for top quality recordings Consider that the DVI tape format is the best. Tapes still available at reasonable prices . When you transfer the recordings to PC is not recognised any more by the Windows operating system past Windows XP. To get round this problem I recently got a used Sony RDR-HXD995 DVD Recorder with HDD which you can edit frame by frame. You can still make a DVD and then transfer files to PC. This almost completely new GS17 will give me many happy years of filming to come.

Mini DV Camcorders

I purchased this model as a light-weight camcorder for travel filming generally. It has no sd card or other card photo facilities but can record stills to tape - otherwise it is one of Panasonic's 'cut down' models in editing terms which have merged following the shift to pc editing. It has limited outputs beyond firewire and usb 2 and no inputs.

It weighs little, sits comfortably in the hand, and I have found the panasonic to be reasonably robust. Picture quality is excellent with a good low light facility. The combined menu system and 'joy stick' controls are simple and intuitive.

I prefer the mini dv system to disc or HDD. A tape library is reasonably secure and the original tape does not require transfer to another medium for long term storage. Hard Drive or solid state recording onto the camcorder, inevitably requires later transfer into a PC or other medium for storage.

I have found the Panasonics to be generally reliable, though afer some years' use motor noise can become apparent ~ presumably the solid state storage or images in the camcorder removes this problem.

The trend now is to High Definition and 3D - but it is evident from the high prices on e bay for mini dv camcorders that the mini dv system is well tried, trusted and popular, and does not involve having to manipulate everything via a PC.

Overall I think the discontinuance of mini dv by Panasonic has been premature.Read full review...

RE: Great Starter Cam

Overall the name make helps but it was the overall reviews for this piece of equipment. (http://www.letsgodigital.org/en/news/articles/story_2808.html) It seemed quite a few people could not connect via usb! I did but only in web-cam mode I brought a firewire cable off ebay for £4 which normally retails in town for about £20-30. 1st plug from above cable in comp recognized camera & works excellent. I'm fully enjoying this experience with this GREAT CAMCORDER. Everybody I know have viewed this camera before editing on comp via TV & are surprised of the quality of the picture & especially the sound. I will say say be careful as the camera mic picks up with great clarity. Basically It's hard to argue the amount of quality equipment you get for the price. Also whilst taking a snap shot beware the sound continues recording as I found out after a-few choice words. I am happy as a pig in s**t with this & recommend it.Read full review...

Panasonic NV-GS17

Nice little camera, this is an addition to one I already own, I use them to record events and the results are very good, many people that I record for are surprised of the results of what is basically an amateur machine. Although they are now outdated I would recommend this product as a starter if they come cheap enough, should be able to get one off ebay for less than £70.Read full review...
