Forget Rocky Horror - this ROCKS

This great comedy musical easily out rocks The Rocky Horror Picture Show, and for my money trumps both versions of The Producers, leaning heavily on the original Phantom of the Opera story but bringing it bang up to Glam Rock Date with camp over the top staging and a creaky script.

I stumbled on this in about '83 on a late night TV screening and was hooked; like MadMax2 everybody that I played it to had to get a copy of their own, and yet it never achieved the cult-status of the other movies I mentioned (why?)

Love to hate it, or hate to love it?

This film is probably not to everyone's tastes; firstly it's very hard to categorize - but I will try (without giving the story away).
Obviously you can probably gauge that it's a modern take on 'Phantom of the Opera', but its also a spin on the German legend of 'Faust'. As for style, its a little eclectic and let's face it down right surreal! but, if you think 'The Rocky Horror Picture Show' then you're on the right track... Sort of.
I like to think of this film as a vehicle to showcase the remarkable talents of Paul Williams (you remember; Little Enos - from 'Smokey and the Bandit'). What you may or may not appreciate is the incredible influence Paul Williams has had on our culture over the past few decades! Truly one of the most under appreciated entertainers of all time. True; as a songwriter he has written some of the most iconic melodies of all time "We've Only Just Begun", "Rainy Days And Mondays" - all attributed to the Carpenters. He has also written some memorable TV soundtracks of the 70's "The Love Boat", Kermit's song "The Rainbow Connection" - from the Muppet Show; and as the composer to the children's classic 'Bugsy Malone' - to name but a few.
But, I think where Paul Williams really stands out most to me is as an Icon in himself. Larger than life and virtually a legend in his own lifetime, yet outside of the US little known - which almost makes him an enigma to us in Europe!
If you appreciate films that are not made to a set hollywood format, but designed to transport you to the mind and imagination of the writers own world, then you are in for a treat! The songs are toe tapping and hard to forget; the characters are outrageous, and the story is never what you expect. They will probably never get the chance to make films like this ever again which is a great pity because everyone nowadays is far too critical of every detail. An original pop rock version of Phantom of the Opera.

I specially like the songs. I always liked this movie, because it is an original version of the classic Phantom of the Opera.

heard a lot about this film from other friends, and having seen Body Double and Sisters over the summer, while listening to Patrick Cowley and Sylevster, and been left agog at the high camp of DiPalma, i thought to myself that the time had come to finally taste the disco era's Phantom of the Opera.
Then i discovered that it's no longer available on DVD so ebay was, as often is, the best place to procure. Not watched it yet but it will be perfect to watch with chums as part of a horror double!Read full review...

wonderful,cynical,trashy pastiche of the phantom of the opera, pre - punk glam rock and the horrible side of the music industry - and throw in alot of dark, twisted humour and youv'e more or less summed this film up !
Paul Williams almost steals the show as the Dorian Gray like Swann and Gerrit Graham is ludicrously lurid as the the campy Beef.Read full review...

I SEEN IT WHEN I WAS YOUNGER BUT COULD NEVER REMEMBER THE PROPER NAME OF THE FILM I LUV POP ROCK AND MUSICALS WITH GREAT LYRIS
