Philo Vances
Although every movie has a different Philo, they are all entertaining, the best, in my opinion, being the William Powell Philo. The mix of humor and mystery makes them a perfect fit for the 1930's genre. They are worth watching if only for the study of the progression of the movie making techniques.Read full review

quality of video is bad and worse
some of the movies are really poor quality which is a shame since the movies would be fun to watch. some of the movies look very snowy poor sound. you expect if you purchase a manufactured dvd that they have used the original or quality copy of the move but some of these look like they were video taped over a poor reception antenna TV then to DVD. When you get tired of watching Columbo and Mrs Fletcher reruns. Philo Vance hits the spot.
The movies are well done and fun to watch. Lots of familiar faces in the supporting casts, which help make the stories familiar, like visiting an old friend. But six different Philos makes it a little hard to get a full fix on the character if you are new to Philo Vance. Basil Rathbone still felt like Sherlock Holmes, Bill Powell was the Thin Man, Warren William has been Perry Mason and Philo Vance before he finally became the Lone Wolf. Paul Lukas and Edmond Lowe brought their talent and skills to the role, doing credit to Philo and made the viewing worthwhile. And James Stephenson played Philo in an updated version of the Kennel Murder Case. But there were subtle differences to Philo in each case. It's like Sherlock Holmes: over the years many players have played Sherlock Holmes, from Chuck Heston to Robert Duvall to Roger Moore to Nicol Williamson, but Basil Rathbone was Sherlock on the film screens until Jeremy Brett brought him to life on the TV presentations. Still, Philo is fun to watch, and this collection is a worthy addition to your home film library. A pleasant change when you get tired of watching Columbo and Mrs Fletcher reruns. Philo Vance hits the spot. Read full review

A great murder mystery series, I recommend it to all mystery fans!
A great mystery series with fine actors and engaging plots. Sometimes the stories drag a bit, but I have no other complaints. A must for all murder mystery fans!
