Possessed (DVD, 2005)

Great film noir, even for non-Crawford fans.

I'm not a big Joan Crawford fan, but she's perfectly cast as Louise in POSSESSED. This is one of the best of the film noir genre. Louise is in love with David (Van Heflin), but he breaks up with her. Louise's possessive neediness turns to obsession and eventually insanity. As David himself points out, he hasn't done anything to Louise, except fall out of love with her. He never leads her on, making it clear he has no further interest in her. Yet he maintains a friendship with Louise's employer, and is pleasant to Louise in public, which makes it impossible for Louise to move on. Louise finally marries her employer, a nice guy who might have helped her get over David eventually, except that David starts dating Louise's stepdaughter, with whom Louise has a strained relationship. This is like FATAL ATTRACTION from the woman's viewpoint, and you can actually understand why Louise loses it under pressure.Read full review
