Poulan PP3816 16" Chain Saw

First of all I have never used or owned a chainsaw. I had several small trees around my home I wanted to take down so started looking for a chainsaw. My main concern was price as I wasn't sure I would use it much at all and just wanted something to get me thru a few trees. Used chainsaws sold for around the same price or even more so when I seen this refurbished Poulan for only $69.99 and free shipping I couldn't resist. Item arrived and looked almost new and came with a brand new chain. I put it to work cutting down and cutting up around 6 or 7 small trees ranging from around 3-8 inches in diameter. It performed great and look forward to using it to do some more.

The only issue is it did cut off a couple of times while turning it to its side to cut and idling. This could have been due to being low on gas or user error. It would crank right back up though.

For the price it can not be beat.

Poulan 16" chain saw

When it starts it works great but, it's hard to start and until it warms up it stalls often. Still, it's light weight and easy to maneuver. I intend to have it looked at by a repair person, it may just need adjustment.Read full review

Good saw and Good Value

This saw grows on you. It is different from my other more expensive saws but after you get used to it is fine. To fill the tank up and get some gas in the primer bulb will take a few tries. You must get the bulb full before priming. Maybe it takes a little time for gas to flow from the tank but finally it is accomplished. Try holding the bulb down toward the ground as this seems to help. After this exercise you probably will not want to run totally out of fuel as once the bulb loses prime you have to go through this again. Then you are ready to start. Pull the choke all the way out as this turns the ignition on and locks the throttle on a higher rpm setting.. When she warms up After a minute or so then be prepared to turn up the idle or T screw with a flat blade as you grab the throttle and let it come down to idle rpm. Idle is factory set too low and must be adjusted to the right or clockwise after you release the warm up throttle or trigger. . Adjust idle up with the T Screw so the chain starts to turn but then back off a little until the chain is just stopped. That is about 1 1/2 turns clockwise. After a little break in the saw runs fine and doesn't stall. After the first use the saw and its character becomes a friend and you know how to tame her.Read full review

Handy to have

I have had many chainsaws. First of all I have cut 4k trees in a season. Husquvarna and Stihl are my choice. I depend on them for a living. Needless to say I have to have a trim saw. These are more beat up and thrown around than my xp394 and 066. So to make things quick and easy I use these cheap saws to knock around the bush. Good choice so far. This brand is not long lasting because they use cylinders that are not chrome or plated. Duration is shortened because it is cheaper to make them. For the average farm use this saw will do for most. Life on this unit is about 50 to 80 hrs of use. Make sure you use synthetic oil in the engine mix fuel will extend the life. I mix 30 to 1 and seems to do well. The chain toss it when you get it. LOL Buy the carlton chisel full for the 16 inch bar. Now you got a real trimmer for the money. What I like about the folks that refurbished this saw it was done right. Compression was dead on and tight bore. Being new starting the saw is important. Mix 25 to 1 and run it at idle for 30 min. Finish the tank working the saw but check the tightness on the chain. Another tip is run the chain tight without oil for only a few minutes to seat the chain. Before you work it. Only what I do it will work fine to oil up before use. Chain will need adjusted a bit more and for safety check it often. I have had four last 2 yrs without a problem. This engine is a replica of the old German sach's engine. Has great speed range on the cutting side. Not a high rpm so makes it very controllable up in the air. The handling of the saw is very comfortable. The angel of the bar is perfect. Keeps from bending down and felling is at the right angle to set the key hinge. Good luck and be safe with the right gear that you should use. Husquvarna has a build on this saw. Go to there site for use and safety. Have a super day.Read full review

3816 poulan chainsaw

The saw was purchase for 29.95 needed repair the piston and cylinder are in good shape but saw needed to be taken apart reason: had lots of carbon inside the lower cylinder section. The carbon was acting like sand piston and cylinder were washed Most of the carbon was removed the crank bearing were cleaned and greased etc.. Now the saw operates awesome lots of raww power. Wanted to buy a 543xp Husqvarna but instead wood ported the 3816 awesome very fast cutting saw. The down fall it should be a .325 pitch vs low 3/8 pitch. I would recommoned this saw. A lot of people talk bad about poulan chainsaws I believe poulan is a very good brand saw to buy if your a home owner. No need to buy a 300.00 to 400.00 saw purchase a 3816 poulan and you will be impressed. Very good saw for a home owner to own.Read full review

Homeowner's light duty saw

This saw is intended for your average homeowner. Standard limbing and the occasional tree no bigger than 30" in diameter. As long as the proper mix is used, not left in tank over long seasons and idle is adjusted correctly.....should start on third pull every time. To sum it up, read the manual and follow directions.....It will last. Ignore the regular maintenance and you will have a sore shoulder.Read full review
