Puzzle Quest DS(rare) - worth it if u can find it!!!

Puzzle Quest is your typical puzzle game, almost like a bejewled type, but has an extremely fun roleplaying element to it. Using only your stylus you can upgrade your character with stats, equipment, and spells like most rpgs but... for "puzzle fighting!" I have never played anything like this where there's actually a strategy to how u play the battles it's not just about matching cliched colored gems but its how can you build a possible combo of 4,5 or even 6 of kind gems to help your character and stay one step ahead of your enemy. Graphics are your typical DS graphics as far as gameplay goes but the mini cutscenes have an "animeish" look to them because of the character style chosen.
The sound is probably the most lacking for the whole experience, it's the same looping king arthur music for almost every battle and cutscene not a whole lot of variety.
But if your looking for something to kill time with while enjoying an interesting twist on the puzzle genre then Puzzle Quest is for you.
Im on the bus for at least 2hrs almost everyday so this definately helps me sit through the long ride with something fun to do. Even when I get home I still find myself playing it with the whole, "Just one more dude then ill turn it off" mentality. haha!

Just what I wanted

I just purchaces Puzzle Quest:Challenge of the Warlords (Nintendo DS). I had played a trial version so I knew what to expect, but for those that don't it's and RPG game that takes your character (whichever of the 4 categories with 5 characters each) that you choose all over their home lands fighting in battles against the undead, rabid rats, skeletons, knights and more. The battles aren't head to head contact fights, but puzzle battles (like a Collapse type puzzle) that each Mana (the items you are collapsing) gives you the power to cast spells against your opponent and some do damage just by removing them (skulls). You also have Gold that you can match up to gain money in battles. After battling certain opponents you may also have the option of capturing them and either using them as a mount (rats, spiders, etc.) or just learning their own spells to use in future battles (skeleton: Chill Touch, Spider: Web). This is a great game and I would recommend it to anyone who was into RPG's and battles.Read full review...

Addicting puzzles and a story? SOLD!

I openly admit I bought this based on the review from Tycho of Penny Arcade; I hadn't really heard about it till then. It's based off 'Bejeweled' (and a few older games with a similar premise) but it takes the basic formula and makes it competitive against the AI. Whenever I play this it always takes me a few minutes to adjust to the difference of waiting my turn, but it is loads of fun. The story, while not actually consisting of a lot of the time you'll spend playing this, is good and entertaining. I also enjoy the characters, especially the companions - some of them are downright hilarious. I've actually put off finishing this because it's a perfect game for traveling or killing time, since you can save pretty much whenever outside of a match, so I carry it around whenever I go out of town. Great game, definitely a must-have for your collection.Read full review...

The game is Excellent

The perfect RPG with Puzzle elements. At first glance, it looks just like Bejewelled, but once you start playing, you realize how deep the core gameplay goes. There is a map where you navigate your avatar, there is a "citadel" where you can craft items, you can capture mounts and level them up, there is a store, etc...

The Multiplayer mode is great. You can level up your character by playing against someone before launching into single-player quest mode. The game is well-tuned for this. I was level 20 before I even started questing.

Cons--the occasional art glitches and in timed mode, the pop up text (i.e., "Heroic Effort") covers up the moves (annoying because you are trying to see all the moves in a hurry).

Overall, a great, addictive game. I only wish it was easier to find in a retail setting. I have been raving about it so much to my friends but the release from the publisher was very limited. Get it on Ebay now before the price skyrockets.

i have this game on my puter, wii, xbox, iphone and DSI

I have been addicted to this game for several years and bought the xbox for the expansion pack lol. Its a match 3 and an RPG. Puzzle Quest 2 is also very good , better graphics and more complicated....its what i am stuck on at the moment. the game has many different characters with different spells and talents with easy, medium and hard play so the replay value is above average.I am a 55 yr old female and love this game,Army of Two & 40th day and Bioshock 1 &2....Life is good !!!!!!!!!!Read full review...

An honest review

Puzzle Quest has had a major impact on the 360 if not PC related hardware, having it come for the handhelds like the DS(i) or PSP is a new step. However, for the one I purchased for the DS, you could say there are quite a few flaws I have found:

-The settings do NOT stay the same if you power off or return to the main menu. You'd have to select a different option to have it be your default.

-Some places you touch do not activate or simply go directly to "Illegal move". This I've noticed even if I hadn't touched it.

All in all, Puzzle Quest, Challenge of the Warlords is a masterpiece for any game system you currently own. However, it might be a bad move if you decide to go portal with it with the handhelds.

Horribly addictive. The best of both worlds.

I'm serious when I say you should think about buying this. Being a fan of both puzzle games and the RPG genre, I figured that this might be a fun way to waste some time when I was bored. I was completely right. The problem was, it also wasted time during almost any time of the day. The battles are so quick and easy you think to yourself "ah, just one more won't hurt". Then you are 70 years old with grandchildren. It is a whole lot of fun, and building up your character is easy and challenging to do. The "story" is there, but who really cares. Getting a huge combo on an ice giant and watching his hp drain away is way more satisfying than saving whatever land this takes place in.Read full review...

irregular RPG

If you took bejeweled or zoo keeper and added a turn based RPG you would get Puzzle Quest. The story, overworld, and items all resemble the aspects of classic RPGs but in order to progress in the game you battle via puzzle board. Taking turns you and your opponent match 3 similar gems till one is the victor.

If you like puzzle games and your like RPGs at all you will dig this game. The combo lends itself to a lengthy time eating and addictive experience. You will find yourself devoting hours into this one. DS touch mechanics make it a preferred medium.

DS Puzzle Quest

Love those RPG games...challenging mentally. Fun quest. I like games I can think about and plan and try to outguess. As opposed to action games that require constant attention. I can be interrupted and come back to it easily. This one is pretty fun and challenging.
I have it on the Wii too....
Thanks for asking - from Fairbanks, Alaska - happy spring
