Love wins the heart and soul.

Robert Taylor (Marcus Vinicius) plays the part of a successful, confident man of the world military leader who despises anyone who has no backbone, who shows any form of weakness, and considered Christians as sniveling, spineless weaklings looking at life as through rose colored glasses. Until, he meets and falls in love with the tender hearted, totally surrendered-to-Christ beauty, (Lygia) played by Deborah Kerr. He then is seduced by her love and devotion to Christ to see Christianity in a whole new light, especially, when Nero played by Peter Ustinov sets out to destroy Rome and blame it on the Christian community there. Nero's evil intentions are to eradicate Rome of all Christians, who refuse to worship him as a god, and who worship Christ as the only true God. Their implacable refusal to bow to Caesar and recant their faith ultimately results in Nero's persecution of Rome's Christians, driving them into the coliseum as cattle to be eaten by lions and burnt at the stake. Marcus Vinicius, having been arrested and held captive by Nero, is forced to watch the gruesome spectacle but is able to escape his captors and enter the coliseum to rescue his beloved Lygia. During this time, the whole city is made aware of Nero's sinister plan and revolts. Nero, having lost the support of the Senate and facing a revolution commits suicide. Rome gets rid of an evil-murdering ruler, Marcus Vinicius get the love of his life, and Christ wins a giant champion of the Faith.Read full review

Three Triumphant Hours of Unforgettable Thrills!

I love epic films from the good old days. I love period films. I love the subject of Rome and anything related to it. This movie is about the Roman Empire's most hated Emperor Nero. It's fun to watch Peter Ustinov as a comedic dictator; the man is lovable he's hard to hate. Robert Taylor plays his role beautifully also. The picture has some soft focus at times and it appeared to flicker as well. Audio was fine in its original monophonic format. The best thing for me on this BD is that it includes the original trailers. Audio commentary is also available. I wish this film could have been filmed in some panoramic widescreen format but that was not possible at the time. Academy ratio is adequate. Some blue screen effects are painfully noticeable. Regardless of its technical flaws, this is a good movie that anyone can enjoy. If you like movies that take place in biblical times, give this one a try and add it to your collection.Read full review

Beautiful film, entertaining story

Quo Vadis is a beautiful film, portraying a fictional story involving the rise of Christianity in Rome, the great Fire that destroyed much of the city, the persecution of Christians, and the end of Nero's reign, all centered around the love story of a Christian girl and the Roman commander who desires her. Not fully historically or biblically accurate, but extremely entertaining nonetheless, with the decadence of Rome and the cruelty of the torturous deaths it inflicted on Christians, both on full display.Read full review

Excellent Potrayal

I am kind of a purist when it comes to historical flicks and this movie captures the times in ancient Rome very well during the Neronian persecution of Christians. Yes, Hollywood does glamorize the scenes a bit, but overall it is accurate as to what was happening at the time. Acting is very well done by the main characters. Remember too, the cast of thousands of extras was done at the time without the computer graphics/enhancements of our current movies. The flick is kinda long by today's standards, but well worth the time. It is in my top ten movies of all time! Read full review
