Inspiring, perhaps overwhelming.
this is the best version of King Lear I have seen. Anyone who stages that play ought to see and be inspired by the Kurosawa version.

Japanesse Shakespere
Very Good Film. Shakespere's King Lear told as a Samurai story. Cant be beaten. Much is made of doing shakespere in comtempoary surrondings. Kurosawa did it in the 50's, There is RAN and also Throne of Blood, which is MacBeth.
Only Downside is that it is old and therefore Black and White. But no wooden actingRead full review...

RAN..... Classic Japanese Film
Although the DVD that I bought was an ex rental, without case, etc, the film itself played ok. The film is about Samurai Clans in olden times.
The leader of a Samurai clan has died, and rather than have this announced, they have found a double to take the place of their leader...But there are twists, a plenty, and the film is pretty atmospheric, ( you feel as though you are actually there ), the photography is brilliant, the costume are too, there seems to be no expense saved reproducing the period film.
All in all a great classic Japanese Samurai fim, a joy to watch...Much better than most Hollywood films....I should have mentioned that the film is subtitled, gives it more realism....great filmRead full review...
A masterpiece
An epic masterpiece and a riot of action and colour, this is one of the greatest films of all time. It is the story of the civil war that follows when a feudal Japanese warlord decides to retire and hands the reins of power over to his squabbling sons. The cinematography, colour and costumes have rarely been equalled and the direction by Akira Kurosawa - especially of the battle scenes - is pure genius.Read full review...
