Photograph free - and better for it

This is an elderly publication but still a useful one. Most current gardening books are packed with lush photographs, which mainly convince you of your own horticultural inadequacies. This book has no photos. Not one - it dates back to a period where full-colour printing was expensive, and so (relatively speaking) was photography itself. instead it has line drawings - many thousands of them, with muted tone in a restricted palette of colours to aid intelligibility. the result is that you can actually understand the points of technique or garden design being illustrated. Disappointing

A pity this is a much cut down version of the original missing out useful sections such as on hedging. This is not clear from the online review.

New Illustrated Guide To Gardening

I bought this for one of my Sons as I have had this book since the seventies when first published and learnt to garden almost exclusively from it. The range of subjects covered is extraordinary and even now after many years of experience it is still the first book I turn to for information. Combine this book with the internet for more expanded information and you won't go wrong.Read full review
