A laugh at Natal policing in the mid-1900s

The entire story is of mute to no value to a non-South African. A reader needs a prior knowledge of the subtleties and under-currents of life in the 1950-60s Apartheid era. Whilst a light hearted and tongue-in-cheek theme it is so very well founded on ever-so-true everyday facets of Afrikaner run policing of society and eloquently, yet harshly, illustrates the innumerable idiosyncrasies of the hypocritical controlling regime, rife with its confounding jaw-dropping stupidities.Read full review

Laughter by the bucket full

Read this when it first came out. Only book at the time to make me convulse with laughter. Not acceptible in todays politically racially society, and that is understandable. We live in a more enlightened society.Read full review

Great laugh

Gripped by the humour in general but really love the way Tom Sharpe describes anything. I will be looking for more. Get it if you can. Specially if you ever spent some time in Southern Africa/Rhodesia etc.Read full review

Good but not his best

Tom Sharpe's first novel is action packed but not quite as sharp as his later work. Good but he gets better!

Very very funny

Awfully funny, highlights all that was wrong with colonialism in South Africa. Brilliantly written, excellent book
