Beyond The Price Tag, One Awesome Machine!

When you initially get this machine in you're hands, you just can't believe that something this small does so darn much! This Roland R05 does a lot more than you can imagine! The clarity is studio quality! Has an auto adjust feature to cancel out unwanted noise to make you're voice sound great. Has reverb if needed, low and hi pass, mic gain, and more! If you operate a podcast, this is a MUST have for you're show! At almost $300 for a new machine, its is totally worth every damn penny! Read full review

All things great and small

This is an great recorder and I believe it is one of the smallest that will record WAV files up to 96k. It weighs next to nothing (a plus) but seems a little cheap in construction--however it is surprisingly well-buffered against handling noise. The only trouble is finding a windscreen that won't block the LCD display. I use it for outdoor, ambient, sound recording, so often wind is an issue. I ended up using a generic foam microphone windscreen and carefully cutting an opening for the display and small hole on the side for the headphone jack. It may not be the prettiest windscreen, but it works well for me. This is the first digital recorder I've owned. I owned a pro-Walkman (cassette) for years before this, but always had trouble finding good quality mics for it. Before I bought the Roland, I borrowed a Zoom H4N and hated it; the sound quality was just OK, the size awkward, the battery life horrible, and on top of that, it had such ridiculously long boot-up time, I'd often miss the thing I was trying to record. The Roland boots up in a matter of seconds and also sounds better than the Zoom to my ears. I also borrowed a Sony PCM M10 and really liked it, but they have become cult items and are out of my price range. The Roland is a sleeper and I am very satisfied with it.Read full review

Great portable machine for all of your recording needs!

The Roland R-05 is the upgrade from it's predecessor the Edirol 09 series also from Roland. It's easy to use, has great fidelity, and longer battery life. So whether you record concerts, recitals,
lectures, podcasts, or anything else that requires a portable recording device, the Roland R-05 is for you.Read full review

Great itty-bitty audio recorder

I record choirs and musical groups. Over the years I've used everything from Minidisc to laptops to Tascam DR07's to this. For my portable recording needs this little guy is terrific. In a direct comparison with the Tascam (a very good and reliable machine) this one has about a 6db lower noise floor, though frankly the Tascam is good enough for live recordings (given typical room tone, audience noise).

In addition the case is metal, a very good thing. A bad thing is that the black printing on the metal case will eventually begin to rub off. But all in all a very, very nice portable recorder.

The Downside

It has no external speakers so you can't replay it unless you hook up a mini headphone set. If you're with a group only you can hear it. You can't really get the full impact of what you recorded until you download into a computer with speakers or connect to a set of speakers that will work with it. It works for my purposes but probably wouldn't work in everyone's circumstance.Read full review
