Rush - Live In Rio DVD

I have seen the Dynamic Trio in concert many times, from the early Farewell to Kings Tour (1977) to the recent Snakes and Arrows Tour (2007), and they have always put on a good show. The Live In Rio DVD is no exception, and was recorded at the end of the Vapour Trails (2002) tour, following Neil Peart’s return after his tragic personal circumstances. It’s a good two and a half hour plus show, with an excellent blend of new and old favourite tracks, which you will soon find yourself playing your air guitar and singing along to within a few minutes of playing the DVD.

The set is good and the various camera views and close-ups are well balanced. The audience sound is a little lost, but there are some splendid shots of the fans obviously enjoying the show, including some very attractive South American ladies…I’m off to Rio on the next flight in search of a Rush lady fan!

A nice touch with the DVD menu options is that you can go straight to specific tracks without having to play the whole show, or skip forward...but why would you want to do that!

The DVD has 2 disc’s, and the second is a documentary about the band, which is interesting and entertaining in itself. It contains a couple of Easter Eggs, one of which I have managed to trigger off, but the second eludes me.

The only criticism I have with this production, is that it is a little too heavy on the guitar balance, which tends to swamp Geddy Lee’s classic bass sound, which we all love to hear. The likely answer is that on the day of recording the concert, the road crew arrived late at the venue to set up the stage, and the documentary tells you that there was only just enough time to get the gear ready, and that no sound check was done prior to Rush hitting the stage. Still don't know why the balance could not have been adjusted during the show, or during post production. Maybe it’s because Alex Lifeson did the mix for Dolby Stereo! (lol).

Anyway, all in all if you are a Rush fan then this is a definite MUST.

the best

I have never come across a better music dvd. Rush are one of the few truly accomplished acts and their live performances are amazing. The sound is fantastic and the material demanding. The other dvd about "on the road" is for once truly facinating, i really enjoyed it. This dvd never gets boring, it can't be overplayed, if you like rock or are a musician of any sort, then buy it now!!Read full review...

Rush.Live in Rio

If,like me,you are a long term Rush fan, this is an absoloute must have. With a track listing ranging from classic Rush through to more modern day, this is a tour de force as only Rush can do.And to prove to the critics who have accused them of being "prima donnas",there is a very humourous undercurrent to the whole concert. The last time I enjoyed a live video this much was my first viewing of Pink Floyds "Pulse" back in 1996.If you are not a fan, this may just sway your mind.Read full review...

Rush in Rio DVD

Excellent dvd. A must for all rush fans, it's amazing that only 3 people (rush) can produce such a full sound (The police never managed it :-) )
The first half is better than the second half, but it's all very enjoyable.
Play it loud to get the full concert effect.
