Dark and Light

My favourite Black Sabbath album will always be their first which, in my opinion, set the tone for the heavy metal genre. This is my least favourite of the five albums with Ozzie on vocals before drugs and drink took their toll. Having said that, his vocals are in good form. The rest of the band are excellent and the tunes vary from heavy to hard rock. Surprisingly, there are also synths on some tracks which certainly change the feel of the album.
The mix can be a bit overwhelming at times with extreme bass and extreme treble competing for head room leaving little space for the moderate tones. I did enjoy listening to this album again for the first time since it was originally released and, for me, it did mark a turning point in the band's progress. I never much cared for later offerings or line-ups. Osbourne himself said that it was the time he should have left the band although he managed a couple more albums, before being sacked.
Recommended if you already have the first four albums.

Bloody brilliant

Classic album from the Grandfather’s of heavy metal. The 180g vinyl record Sounds great (to me anyway). The liner notes on the gatefold sleeve are really entertaining with the band recalling how they recorded the record, just fantastic stuff. Highly recommended.Read full review...
