How a mystic evolved

I read St. Francis many years ago and it deeply impressed me. He starts out as a rich son and gives all one day's earnings to a beggar who asked for it. He joins an army and is taken prisoner during which he evaluates his life. He has a vision after which he loses interest in the previous carefree existence. Another vision where Christ says "rebuild my church". This is the known life story. Kazantzakis weaves a psychological aspect to through the rest of the story. At the end I was convinced Francis' visions were real. A convincing story. Similar treatment in The Last Temptation of Christ.Read full review
