Does exactly what it should - just a bit slowly.

For the sheer quality of the High Definition output I cannot fault it.

I bought the boxed HD Blu-Ray versions of the "Pirates of the Carribean" trilogy (complete hogwash, but what CRYSTAL CLEAR hogwash) and the BBC "Planet Earth" series (superb and delightful as well as also being crystal clear) and played them through a modern HD tv via the HDMI interface. No ifs or buts, the results are breath-taking.

I also play my old DVDs through it and the results are excellent.

The only reason it doesn't get a 5 is the length of time it takes to do anything. Let me give you an example.

You press the "Open/Close" button on the front of the unit to make the DVD carrier slide out for loading. Now this isn't a difficult concept, is it? Press the button and the DVD carrier slides out. Where's the difficulty?

Yet it takes about 15 or 20 seconds for the carrier to move. You press the button and wait ... and wait ... and wait ... and wait ... and then, oh yes, out it slides. Suffering Christ! Why?

It just seems so bizarre that an excellent unit that produces such stunning results seems incapable of doing a simple task without navel-gazing for a quarter of a minute.

This said, the actual performance of the machine is so good I heartily recommend it - just make sure you have a good book to help pass the time.

A lot of machine for the money

My first impression of the BD-P1400 was that its a rather large but sylish machine for just a blu ray player. It looks good under the tv. The shiny facia giving an expensive air. Start up is reasonably quick and the user interface is easy to use. The player features an ethernet connection for firmware upgrades. I tried this a couple of times before any success. The reason for failure was that it takes 30 minutes to download the upgrade after which you get 3 seconds to confirm whether or not you want to install it. You therefore have to be glued to the screen just in case you miss it. The machine is only profile 1.0 so it will not play bonusview material or connect to BD Live. There has been a lot of chatter on message boards about what was promised by Samsung for this model. After reading it I am glad that I bought a used model. It dos and will continue to play blu ray movies but if you want all the fancy stuff go for a profile 2 player and expect to pay a couple of hundred pounds.Read full review...
