DVD-RAM and VHS player/recorder in compact package

Samsun DVD-VR320 is compact ja quite well designed DVD-RAM/VHS combo product. It is possible to record to both DVD-RAM and VHS tape and also possible to transfer media clips from VHS to DVD and vice versa. Only little inconvience is that VHS and DVD-RAM signal inputs had to selected each time if powered off (VHS mode and DVD-RAM mode don't use the same signal input as default which is odd and maybe a design flaw). Also little inconvience is the DVD-RAM error sensitivity. Formatting the DVD-RAM disc does not always help, same DVD-RAM disc may work at Panasonic DVD-RAM recorder without any problems. But in general i like the Samsung sleek design and the remote control is quite logical and easy to use. Quite common failure is that the DVD-RAM disc tray motor belt is broken but it is easy to fix by opening the disc tray at full length and changing the transfer motor rubber belt.Read full review...

Samsung DVD-VR320 review

I bought this Samsung DVD recorder because I wanted to have something for transfering VHS cassettes to DVD without the need for a computer. 2 important features made me select this product. First is the connectors to external devices, and secondly the firewire input which is good for transfering from your dv camera or HDV sourcese straight to dvd.
On using it the first time, I found it quite easy to use. One very important feature I found was the "video noise reduction". I burnt two DVDs from the same VHS cassette. The first one was recorded with the noise reduction activated and the second was transfered just normally. The quality of the DVD recorded with noise reduction activated was significantly better. Picture was smoother.

The Samsung DVD-VR320 also has some inbuild editing capability which I did not try because I did not really need them.

On h whole, I would say it is a very good product to have if you will be doing a lot of transfer from VHS to DVD for personal use.Read full review...

VHS to DVD recorder

I chose this item originally based upon other reviews seen elsewhere on this item and appreciated that this unit was probably one of the first generation devices that came onto the market in understanding how to move on your VHS legacy tapes onto a more universal DVD product.

Don't expect any refinements with its capabilities and be prepared to understand how DVD's are made. Otherwise the unit is a low cost entry into VHS/DVD conversion market.

The instructions are fairly straightforward and seems easy to set up based on the manual instructions so this makes the device easy to understand from the layperson's perspective. The specifications indicate a analogue to MPEG2 conversion with the ability to edit specific tracks/volumes, which is fairly basic.

Unfortunately, in this particular purchase experience the seller forgot to mention he was a heavy smoker so the unit was heavily (I mean heavy) contaminated with smoke/nicotine that rendered the video heads and DVD laser lens quite inoperative until cleaned and then also found out that it had been dropped so the electronics had been made completely useless - not a good experience especially as he became abusive when I complained.

Being as I come from an electronics background it was easy to ascertain the seller was just out to fleece an unsuspecting buyer, just sorry it was me!

Don't let me put you off though as if you can get hold of one of these units then its worth considering a low cost method of transferring that old tape collection you meant to do something about someday. In my case however, I lost £70 - but still looking for another unit.Read full review...
