Introductory digital SLR with lots of features

Because it's got a built in powerful telephoto lens the camera is a little bulky BUT it's extremely good value and packed with features. I've bought it as an introduction to digitalSLR before commiting to an expensive camera and I'm not disappointed.Read full review...

Samsung Pro815

Wow this really is the business. Having owned and used digital cameras for a number of years, and like many people upgrading as the technology improved, this camera really ticks the right boxes. I had moved from fixed lens through optical zoom to optical/digital zoom, purchasing cameras and accessories along the way. My last camera a Sony CD500 had both optical and digital zoom but lacked the benefits of wide angle and was limited by the digital zoom effects. Purchasing both wide angle and zoom lenses with the necessary adapter rings solved this problem but not the one of what to take, what to have fitted etc. for that special unrehearsed shot.
The Pro815 has both wide and zoom integrated into one lens, and with 15x optical zoom is really superb for those close ups. This feature is improved by the digital choice of 2x or 4x which in real terms means 30x or 60x zoom. Having read the reviews, understood the basics of the technology to handle up to 60x zoom i took the plunge. believe me I have not been dissapointed and am amazed at the results. It is true that at such extreme settings camera shake is a problem and I have resorted to a tripod when setting a scene, however when the scene suddenly appears, as many do on my home ground of Exmoor, and you have no time to set up, the use of the High Speed shutter setting and my best attempt at keeping perfectly still produce some excellent results. Oh and the battery life is phenomenal. On a weeks holiday recently, taking shots every day, totalling approx 130 over the week, I did not have to recharge, a problem which caused great consternation with previous cameras.
Now I admit I purchased this camera solely on its simplicity, but as someone who usually leaves settings on auto I am now hungry to have a go at the manual settings, something I have only touched on in the past.
I truly have no dislikes, it is a well balanced camera, lighter than my last and I am sure will serve me for years to come.

Why buy an expensive SLR when this does the job!

Since compleating a photography course at college last year, I have just not had the money to buy an expensive SLR to do all the things I wanted to. But I came accross a review about the Pro815 and it looked just what I was looking for. After looking for the best deal on ebay, I found my baby!
At £116 (what I paid for it), it was cheaper than most point and shoot cameras so I wasnt expecting the reviews to be accurate....but they were!!!!
I love it and would recomend anyone to have a look at it. The long zoom lens is awsome, very large LCD viewing screen is easy to use with on board features like real time histogram and loads more.
If you just want a camera with a point and shoot mode, then the auto is great for that too and the camera still has all the extras if you want to learn more.
Even my brother in law, who is a professional photographer and has £1,000's worth of gear is very impressed with the Pro815 and is going to buy himself one to take to places he wouldnt risk the expensive gear.
Nothing I dont like about it but shooting in RAW takes a bit longer to process than some SLRs.

Leica better watch their back

I used a film slr for thirty years, developing and printing both 35mm and medium format.
For me image quality is the no.1 consideration.
It took a long time to find anything digital to rival the quality of film. For me it was the Panasonic Lumix range - Fz8, Fz30 and now the DMC-L10. I did not expect to come accross anything that could rival the Leica lenses of the Panasonics for resolution and sharpness, especially not a Samsung.

However, I have to admit that in my opinion, the Pro815 produces images as sharp and detailed as I would want, and I would probably have to admit superior to the Panasonics.

On the negative side, the Samsung has limited iso range - only up to 400, and as the camera applies very little noise reduction in processing jpegs, the images at iso 400 are very noisy. However the colour saturation and fine detail are still excellent, and I would accept a bit of noise for retained detail anyday.
Weighing up , the lens and overall image quality outweighs the iso and noise issues.

A Digital Diamond

I started researching this particular camera over a year ago, and I was impressed by the specification. The camera seemed in a class of its own compared with other fixed-lens digitals, and I grew hungry for one, even though I own a Canon 400D and a Rollei digital.
Nobody had one in stock, or even knew what I was talking about, so I thought Ebay! After several failed bids I secured a fantastic deal.
The camera is superb in every way and is becoming my camera of choice when I leave the house. Whatever Samsung's reasons for stopping production were, I feel it was under-priced, and is a Rolls-Royce of a camera.
