Sarah's Key (DVD)
Sarah's Key is a fascinating story (based on the book) about a woman who, while living in Paris, obtained a flat from her husband's family that was actually originally stolen from its Jewish occupants during the Nazi occupation of France in the second world war, by their willing French collaborators. Sarah was the little Jewish girl who was living in the flat when the French Nazis forcibly removed her and her family, deporting them (with thousands of other women and children, and any men left who had not already been "deported" to be used as forced labour..) - I can't say any more about the movie without spoiling the plot for those who haven't seen it, but what I can say is that I was glued from start to finish, and extremely moved by this movie. Half of it is in English, the other in French with English subtitles - don't let this put you off watching this film by any means - it only adds to the authenticity of the story. Extremely well acted but a disappointing adaptation of a tragic story.
Having recently read the book, I wanted to see the film to see how this tragic story was dealt with and especially as Kristin Scott Thomas was the lead star in the movie. However, I was disappointed in the movie as so much had been left out which rather destroyed the story and the message. However, it might be good to watch the film before reading the book as an "appetiser".Read full review
