Great tool worth every penny.

I was very worried I would need to dismantle my engine and be faced with a costly machining bill but then I saw the thread chaser on ebay and decided to give it a go.

The chaser worked excellently and it was also very easy to use. so for a small outlay and a few minutes of time it saved me a lot of money and stress.Read full review...

Good tool, but very delicate

I’m a mechanic by trade and had a few Rover V8 engines that have alloy heads, two of which had some stripped threads for the spark plugs.

I saw these on EBay and thought I would give it a go, what I did notice is how the price varies for the tool, you can find them between £14 to £40!! All Sealey branded.

The first one I brought did the job ok, but remember it is a cheap tool, halfway on recutting the thread it started to struggle and upon removing it I saw that one of the threaded legs had slightly twisted which meant the remaining threaded legs would not align with the other threads, there seems to be quite a bit of flex in the tool, probably poor quality steel?

Despite this, the spark plug went in and all was well, but the tool was now useless.

A few months ago I had to do another V8,
I looked at the tool, and decided to get another as I didn’t trust the first one, as in an alloy head, you really only get one chance to get it right, or then you have to go down the insert/Helicoil route.

To my astonishment the same thing happened again!
I had coated the tool in grease this time,
And was very careful in going half a turn at a time, then backing off before cutting more.

The tool isn’t what I would call “garage quality”and not sure how it would stand up to cast iron heads?
But it does do the job, but don’t expect it to last years.

A useful, well-made tool!

This is a useful product and works well. It can be used without any fear that any swarf or dirt from the plug threads will fall into the combustion chamber. When this tool is used the waste matter is drawn out as the tool is wound out of the plug hole. It just about pays for itself in that you save on the cost of a new cylinder head gasket which would be needed if you removed the head to use a tap or similar thread chaser to clean up or repair the threads. I used it on a Stuart Turner marine two-stroke and it fixed the problem of the plugs not screwing up properly. All you need is a small adjustable spanner with which to wind out the tool.Read full review...

Reverse Actio Spark Plug Threas Chaser

The starting thread for the spark plug on the alloy cylinder head had become difficult to start when fitting the spark pug. Watched several youtube videos on using the tool. It worked well and quickly "trued" the thread and the spark plug easily fitted. Very pleased with the result.Read full review...

Great thread re-former!

Does exactly what it says - re-forms the threads of a spark plug hole from the bottom up without putting swarf in the cylinder. Probably wouldn't work on a cast iron head but fine on alloy. Avoids the need to remove the head to re-form the threads.

Great tool and costs less than a head gasket set!

It worked well for me.

Corrected cross threaded spark plug helicoil in aluminium V8 engine. Took a few minutes to get it properly aligned and moving freely up the thread, finger tight only with grease on the tool, When it started to bite I worked it slowly backwards and forwards until it came out of the thread. Done the job really well that my normal from the top thread cutter was unable to do. Very good tool, saved me a lot of hassle in the end.
