Seiko 5: stylish, versatile, well built & reliable for super value
I purchased this watch after much consideration. The Seiko 5 is a fine piece of craftsmanship, and I expect it to last many years. I actually purchased it for my dad, to replace his backlit, batteried Casio with a high quality timepiece, but he rejected change - although it's basically exactly the same width, styling, etc. He also prefers a stretch band, which I could have gotten, but no go. Sigh. So the watch is now mine. I have worn is every day since that time, and it has worn very well. There's not a scratch on the glass/crystal, and just the faintest wear near the lugs.
The SNK381K1 model in particular met all my wishes (for a gift watch for my dad any way). Fairly large face, but not too big or heavy, easy to read Arabic numbers that illuminate for a decent amount of time in the dark, the date, all stainless steel construction, and a deployable clasp.
If you're looking for a solid, automatic, this is a great buy. I got it for around $100, which I thought then and now was a steal.
Update: After about a year of use, give or take, I personally prefer a larger watch face. I think this face size is 36mm, and I would like a 45mm+ size instead (see Lumino Atacama). I have a medium sized wrist I'd say, and yet the watch appears fairly small. I would say the watch size is rather 'classic', but todays modern styling I think is towards more pronounced, wider. Chalk it up to personal preference.
The Seiko has been exceptional for daily use. Wears well, looks clean. The lug width is 18mm, and I've swapped out the stainless band for a custom leather NATO strap.
It does keep time really well I have found, although, as far as losing seconds, I haven't noticed any loss, perhaps because I have a habit of setting the time 5 minutes ahead so I'm always early. ha The stainless band I found less polished, and had semi sharp edges. I thought perhaps I'd got back to and upgrade the stainless band, but I think I'll resell the watch instead and buy a larger width, perhaps a larger Luminox Atacama field watch, although 4x the price of this Seiko 5.
For a first and or everyday wear automatic, I can recommend the Seiko 5.Read full review

Great watch regarless of price, amazing value!
Great little watch! It looks better in person than it does in pics. I removed the bracelet and put a 2-piece leather strap on it, and it looks great. Hands are easy to read, as is the date. The lumed hands and hour numbers glow very strong after exposure to direct light. The dial almost looks like a very dark blue but is definitely black. The only downside is the scant water resistance rating of 30m. Regardless, I am happy to own this watch; I am beyond satisfied with the watch and plan to wear it as much as I can!Read full review

seiko SNK 381 watch
Excellent quality. Outstanding value. 38 millimeter size is ideal and does not look huge and awkwardly exhibitionist likeSo many watches, in particular the 44 millimeter sizes. I love way it glows in the dark. All 12 numbers are completely Lumed - not just the little dots.
I do not like the style of the hands. That's just my preference. Be aware that it is not hand windable. Only the motion of your wrist winds it. Similar to model SNK K35KRead full review

Excellent for the price
It is my favorite Seiko 5 model. It looks and feels 10 times more expensive. A watch that horology enthusiast will approve: 37 mm diameter, in-house movement , day and date complication, signature 4 o’clock crown and excellent lume. Manufactured by a brand with a long and rich history. Read full review

The best value mechanical automatic watch in the world!
Since it's relase in 1963 this watch represents the pinnacle of value for money. The quality of this watch is amazing considering it's price. I love everything about this watch except it's size. It is a little too small for my wrist but this is only a minor issue. I could have bought 5 of these for the cost of a single service on my IWC! If you are not a brand slave and apreciated quality and value don't hesitate to purchase any Seiko 5.Read full review

A Very Fine Watch.
I am very pleased with the watch. I owned a Seiko years ago and was happy with the quality, which is why I decided to buy a new one. I made a good choice.
I quite like the black dial with complete Arabic numerals. It's distinctive, and easy to read for my older eyes.
Thank you.Read full review

A close copy of the 6119-8100
I bought this to replace my Seiko 5 6119-8100 that I received in Vietnam. That eatch became too valuable to wear as a daily watch. This model is a very close copy of the 6119-8100 but improves on it with a stainless case. The numerals are slightly different in font but just as visible to this old veteran. A great watch at a good price!Read full review

a decent mechanical watch for the price
Wanted this model after reading an online article about it. Not a fan of the steel bracelet it comes with. Changed it to nato-style military strap. The automatic movement will stop if you leave it unworn for about a day. I don't like that it is water resistant only -- can't shower with it or go swimming. A good mechanical watch for the price. Mine was brand new. Read full review

High quality for low price
A very good looking watch for small money. Build and finish quality are very good. Keeps good time. Iconic Seiko 5 (with crown at 4 - like the original).
Cons: low quality bracelet. Very hard to adjust size.
No hack and manual wound (as expected for Seiko 5).
Size looks even smalker than it is. Will not fit large hands.Read full review

Comfortable, small, straightforward, zero-pretense automatic watch.
My first automatic watch. It runs smoothly and it's comfortable to wear all the time, even in bed, which I've never done with other watches. I like the black dial and that both the numbers (which are Arabic numerals) and hands are luminous, so you can easily tell time in the dark. It's got a small face/case size, which is a breath of fresh air for me, but if you're used to those huge clunky watches, be aware. Seller sent me a link to the user manual, so you don't have to worry about the Spanish dates (you can display either English or Spanish day names) or the fact that it doesn't wind up. I set the date and time several weeks ago, and it's truly "set it and forget it". Doesn't need winding, or batteries, and so far the time is very accurate. I don't think it's gained or lost a second yet.Read full review
