This is one of the Great Westerns of American Cinema. Filmed in large part near Jackson Hole, Wyoming, with the Grand Tetons as a backdrop, it is visually aesthetic before a word is spoken. Alan Ladd is Shane, a sure handed gunman who comes across a homestead under siege by local cattle barons. Van Heflin, the courageous, out numbered rancher holding on to his dreams. Jean Arthur, the farm wife, who brings beauty and elegance to a role no longer projected in modern cinema. Their will opposed, the cattle barons send for Jack Palance, who turns in a commanding role as the hired range assassin. It all adds up to one of the great, archetypal westerns made for a generation which has slipped into history.
