Hands down the BEST vocal mic on the planet!!!

I've never been so proud to own a ksm9 mic.
This microphone produces studio quality clarity in a live performance situation. Having the option to switch between a cardioid and a supercardioid polar pattern lets you cut through even the most loudest backing band with out worrying about feedback. Shure KSM9 VS AKG C414XLII

I had recorded several times using both Microphones in my Home Studio on the same songs during the same record takes (take 1, take 2 etc.). I liked the Shure KSM9 slightly better than the AKG C414XLII and I paid more for the AKG.
Both Mics sound really good but after listening to them many times, I felt that the KSM9 had a warmer more full bodied sound. This is not a negative against the AKG C414XLII. I liked them both so much that I combined them into each Lead Vocal recording which in my opinion provided more depth and a wider thicker sound. My voice range is low to very high and both Mics captured my sound well .

Good but Not my Favorite

I decided to buy a used KSM9SL in excellent condition after reading many reviews and watching video reviews. It has polar patterns of Supercardioid and Subcardioid and I liked the Sub better. However on either setting the sound was a little thin and hollow and took some EQ tweeking to get it close to what I liked. To compare I recorded a guitar track to a verse and chorus of a song then recorded my vocal through the KSM9, a Blue Encore 300 and my all-time favorite an AKG330BT although the AKG is not a condenser. I did not use any EQ for this and set the input gain for equal sound discovering that the KSM9 required considerably more gain than the Blue, The 2 condensers went through a 1990's ART preamp. Each vocal went onto a different track and I listened to each separately to decide which is best. The AKG is still my favorite and of these 3 mics, the KSM9SL is my least favorite although it is an excellent mic. There was a small quiet fan on in the studio during the comparison which I could faintly hear in the KSM9 & Encore300 tracks but I could not hear it at all in the AKG track. Maybe that's because it isn't a condenser, but still it easily won this comparison for my voice. Unfortunately there was no other singer's voice available for me to use in the comparison. If possible, get one to try out on your voice first. It is a very good mic but for me, there are others much better for much less money.Read full review
