Great price, great quality.

This lens has some vignetting problems when shot wide open, but it's not too noticibke, and easy to correct. Images also suffer from slight chromatic aberration and softening in the edges when shot at f2.8 but also not super noticible. Stop down to f4 and this lens is much sharper. I would highly recommend this lens to any aps-c users, especially if all you've ever used is the kit lens, this has that same range and much much better quality. The Canon and Nikon equivalents are way more expensive and not significantly better in image quality. Read full review...

Really stunning hardware, but I had to return it

So, if you are looking for incredible quality and great low light performance for photos in a zoom lens....you found your product. BUT, if you are looking for those same qualities to shoot video, even with an external mic (yes I tried this) not so much. The auto focus is loud, not deafening loud, but it becomes very prominent when recording video. I don't use the in camera recording so I thought my Rode Mic would eliminate the sound...it doesn't. If you are using a Lav or a boom, you will be fine, but if you are mounting the mic or using in camera (which nobody should), forget it. The auto focus is too loud to be usable.Read full review...

One of the best and sharpest lenses.

This lens is equal in sharpness to my two 30mm and 50mm f1.4 prime lenses. At f2.8 the sharpness matches both primes stopped down to f2.8. Honestly it’s an amazing lens and the autofocus is great through the viewfinder and Live View (DPAF) on my 80D. And Servo AF works fine as well since some were saying they had problems. I think if your camera has DPAF, you’ll find that this lens is amazing on live view for photos and videos even with continuous auto focus. Must buy!
Only issue i have is the focus ring moving with the AF but that’s an issue literally everyone else has. Also, the lens has pretty strong focus breathing, fortunately though, when at the wide end, it breathes down to about 15mm at the closest focusing distance so you still get the full 17mm focal length when zoomed to infinity, so you aren’t losing any focal range, you’re indeed gaining a few mm if focusing closer than infinity at the wide end of the zoom.

Best Lens...EVER!!

I truly mean this is the best lens ever. If there is one lens that will be the most helpful to you wherever you go, this is it. I do a lot of photography at conventions shooting cosplayers so I have to work fast lots of times. It's good to have the wide aperture to get the professional looking shots you need throughout the entire zoom range. The auto focus is whisper-quiet. It feels very solid in your hand; very well built. It's a great upgrade to the standard "Kit" lens.Read full review...

Good Lens

I like the lens. It took a minute to get is focused on my canon 80d. It has produced some great pictures and works just as well if not better than the overpriced canon 17-55. I have used both and the pictures might even be better with the Sigma. I fell that canon is over pricing their products and you can by another brand most times at half the price that works just a well. I am very pleased with my purchase, and would recommend it to a friend.Read full review...

So happy I got this over the more expensive Canon

I was debating to get the Canon 17-55 IS EFS but after reading the reviews saying that this was sharper from sources I trusted, I decided to get this one specially it was less money. I love Canon gear but for the price/value, this is a better buy and you can use that extra money you saved to buy extra memory card, etc. It's very sharp wide open at 2.8 and built solid. Lens hood could be made better because it doesn't fit tight enough and it's pretty loose. The image quality and price is really the most important to me. Focusing is accurate and fast.Read full review...

This lens is a must have specially if you don't have any substitute already

This lens, Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 OS is awesome. simply. I love using it with my Canon SL1, the color rendition and light availability is great. I admire most photos I take from this lens. I've used f/1.4 lenses, but this lens seems just good enough for what it is. Focusing is pretty fast based on my experience with canon L lenses; I am happy with the focusing speed of this lens.

I would recommend this lens over the kit lens of crop dslrs. If you can afford it, its worth it even if it is more expensive that your camera body, get it specially if you're doing photography in lower light. f/2.8 gives nice bokeh at 50mm; almost at a level that if you're not anal about it you're not gonna miss your 50mm prime with f/1.8.

Only thing about this lens or I should say about Canon's full frame camera bodies is that they can't really accept this lens because it is designed for crop bodies. I have had full frame Canon dSLR (6D) and I could not use it on it as I was told that full-frame canon dSLRs are not compatible. If you are looking to buy this lens for your Nikon or Canon body, do not hesitate, if the price is right... just get it.

by the way, I got this for roughly $400 CAD (New) Shipped from Japan; and that too because paypal's conversion rate from USD- CAD sucks and they charge wayyy too much. But still I'm happy with this purchase.

Few things to note, the focus ring is not full-time manual focus; you have to switch to manual mode to do that and the focus ring rotates while autofocus so don't hold it. I haven't used any non-HSM sigma lenses so I can't say how well HSM is but HSM is not quiet like Canon's USM or STM lenses. No where close to STM; kind of comparable to USM. But speed is good enough. And there's no internal scale for depth of field or focusing distance but it is available externally marked; which is something; But I prefer the internal ones like on the expensive ones.

Almost impossible to beat the value for money.

An excellent all around APS-C lens for canon. I bought this lens because the 17-50mm zoom range is approximate equivalent to 24-70mm on a full frame camera (6D or 5D III) making it extremely versatile. The wide constant f/2.8 aperture makes this lens very good in low light and delivers excellent Bokeh - smooth and creamy. The lens takes very sharp pictures, even in low light. Autofocus is sharp and quick - does not hunt for focus. Image Stabilization (Sigma calls it OS) gave me 3, sometimes 4 stops difference in shutter speed - a huge advantage over many more expensive lenses (Tamron is usually $150 more in price, and the Canon is double the cost).

Most of the reviews I saw on YouTube said the picture quality was sharp in the center, with slight softness at f2.8 in the corners, which goes away when stopped down to 4 or 5.6. I found this to be very accurate - the picture quality is fantastic. There is some chromatic aberration in the corners, which again goes away when stopped down to f4. Very little vignetting and average barrel distortion for the class. Most of this is not noticeable, and all is easily correctible in post production.

See a great review by Christopher Frost on YouTube for more detail (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t_rPxWpArNY).

There is no full time auto focus - meaning you cannot turn the focus ring when autofocus is engaged. I never found this to be an issue as I almost always use autofocus, and the AF system was very snappy to focus.

As far as size and weight, it is not overly big or bulky. It did weight a little bit more than my kit lens, but I did not find it to be all that noticeable and did not effect usability.

Included Lens Hood fits snug and is easy to mount and reverse for storage when not in use.

The only drawback I could find with it is that the autofocus makes a very low clicking noise when focusing. It won't be heard in most environments, but with no other noise going on it can be heard so it might effect audio in silent/low noise video work. It is not something that would be noticeable during normal portrait work in studio, out doors, at a wedding, etc.

get it, shoot it, love it.

I was skeptical ordering this from Japan but the savings were over $200 for what I could get it for in the U.S. and the shipper said it would be here in 7 days. The item arrived in 5 days and went straight on my camera for a test. This is a heavy lens and huge in diameter but what a great performing lens. I am so happy I purchased it. It is now the exlcusive lens we use. We havent even pulled any of the kit lenses or the 50 prime out of the bag in a month. If you want to save money and get pro results, skip the kit stuff. Get the camera body and this lens. There is no telling how much money I wasted buying the 50 prime, 55-250 zoom plus the kit with the t3i that included the 18-55 3.5 in the end I probably wasted over $500 maybe more.

What makes this lens great is that the 2.8 aperture holds through the entire zoom range which means that at full zoom it lets in four times as much light as the kit and at min zoom it lets in twice as much.

The image stabilized Tameron is over a hundred more and that is the closest competitor in price to this.

anyway enough rambling, one happy customer highly recomended

Early Impressions

It came fast & it was an easy transaction and has to be the cheapest best value upgrade to the kit lens for the Canon Rebel. I researched it pretty good & read a lot of great revues on this product & so far it seems to hit all the high points nicely. Very Sharp, feels well made, pictures are a big improvement & indoor shooting is much improved with the 2.8fs. Would have liked the Canon 17-55, but could not justify the extra $200...this is a great lens.Read full review...

HUGE value, a must-have lens that you'll never take off your camera

I'm a quickly-learning, very-interested amateur photographer. I shoot in low-light indoor conditions a lot, and I'm taking tons of pictures of my kids. Before I got this lens, I had a Canon 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 but that wasn't nearly fast enough. I picked up a cheap Canon 50mm f/1.8 and it was fantastic as a fast lens for my situation. The only problem was that it didn't zoom, and it didn't allow me to take wider angle shots. There were SO many shots I just simply didn't get--group shots, whole-room shots, etc. The 50mm focal length is great for individual portraits of a single kid playing in the living room, but it's extremely limiting when there's more going on in the room that you want to capture.

I had my eye on the Canon 18-55mm f/2.8, but that runs you around $700. I couldn't bring myself to put down the money.

Enter the Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 that you're now looking at. The price point, even brand new from other sites, is around $300. It seemed like a deal that was too good to be true.

The lens really does live up to every expectation, though. Sigma creates lenses that are durable with a very solid, high-quality look and feel. The photos are very clear and beautiful. And most important, the lens is both FAST and VERSATILE enough for my needs.

I anticipate that I'll probably never swap this lens out in favor of either of my old lenses.

If you're an amateur photographer like me, I highly recommend this lens. It will be a significant upgrade to your collection!
