Signs (DVD 2003)

M Night Shyamalan does it again!

This is the kind of movie that is either going to infuriate you or make you think... ohhhh ya, now I understand.

The premise of the movie is ingenious. Crop circles and designs start to mysteriously appear world wide with no explanation and the story follows a small unconventional family set somewhere in the mid west USA.

The story follows a recently widowed reverend (Gibson), his children and Gibsons brother played brilliantly by Joaquin Phoenix. Gibson, having recently lost his faith because of the death of his wife is leading an un-assuming life on his farm, producing acres of corn.

His tranquil life-style is interrupted when crop circles start to appear and he begins to hear and see things during the night. Things definately start to go bump in the night! Is this the prequel to an alien invasion? Is it some sort of "Sign" that the aliens must use?

This movie is absolutely fantastic, however sometimes the story seems to go off on a tangent, leaving the viewer to think, what the hell did you do that for, something that really annoyed me, because I found most of movie excellent.

M Night Shyamalan shows once again that he is the master of suspense and twist, and someone who will surely go down in the annuls of Hollywood as a truely masterful director. Solid performances from Gibson and Phoenix give a really professional feel and something that everyone should see.

A great movie, especially when the days are dark and the nights even darker.... my advise, don't watch it alone..... :-)

Signs

Love this movie - the atmosphere is very brooding and at first you are not sure WHAT type of movie you are watching - loved Joachim Phoenix's performance, but I could watch him in anything! I am replacing old videos with new dvd's.Read full review...

"Signs"

I bought this film as its a title everybody used to talk about. I was curious as it was obviously a film about alien life forms of some description.
Mel Gibson plays a widowed father of two who, after losing his wife in a road accident, diserted his faith and his church having been the priest in the town.
Strange events start happening including signs being made in the crops. At first it is thought to be a hoax, but opinions soon change.
Mel Gibson is a good actor but I do think that this was not one of his best films.
If you are looking for lots of twists and shocks then this probably is not for you. But on the other hand, if you like Mel in anything or you want this film to add to your collection then its fairly ok.
I just think because Mel Gibson's role is normally full of energy, fight and his films full of action, It was probably just too strange for him to play someone so placid and laid back.
Overall it wasn't too bad. I'd probably rate it at a 7/10

Wooden farmer

In this creepy sci-fi thriller, when strange crop circles appear on his land a Pennsylvania farmer and his family begin to suspect an alien invasion is on the cards. Sadly, Mel Gibson turns in a wooden performance as the gloomy farmer.Read full review...

Mel gibson plays this roll well, Its a bit scary and the story line is superb.

Not going into detail but to cut a long story short its about one families struggles and if that wasnt enough then throw in some scary creepy aliens and you have a movie to keep you on the edge of your seat.

Not what i would class as a family movie but one to add to the dvd collection along with the other scary films etc...

Great science fiction thriller movie

Just seen this movie the other week and I already want to see it again, Mel Gibson is great in the film. Great story line with some fantastic twists and turns that you dont "see" (as Hess wife said to him before she died) until its over and you think " ohhhh yea that happened for a reason" a great story about a man and his faith and the "signs" he sees along the wayRead full review...

Signs

I have had this movie on cassette for some time but am now changing my favourites over to DVDs. This one was a must it is a hugely enjoyable film with quite a few belly laugh moments. It seems as though the cast had such a good time making it, with outstanding performances from the child actors too. How lovely to watch a film that dosen't include four letter words every few minutes, because the writer of this script wasn't too lazy to find the right words to express emotions.Read full review...

Signs Review

Review
Back in 1999, filmmaker M Night Shyamalan hit on a successful formula with his quiet, brooding supernatural thriller The Sixth Sense. The film soared into the chart of highest grossing films ever, indicating to Shyamalan and backers Buena Vista that there was an audience for thought-provoking takes on traditional B-movie subjects. So he followed it up with Unbreakable, a reinvention of the superhero. Signs incorporates a dash of humour, but otherwise it's portentous business as usual.

Mel Gibson replaces Bruce Willis as Shyamalan's quiet, frowning lead. Gibson plays Graham Hess, a priest who has lost his faith after the death of his wife. He spends his time hanging about on his farm in rural Pennsylvania, with his brother Merrill (Phoenix, an ideal brother to Gibson), who moved in to provide moral support, and his two endearing kids, Morgan (Culkin, who does 'mature kid' where his older brother Macaulay did 'mischievous') and Bo (newcomer Breslin, a quirky addition to the school of junior screen charmers). The family's mournful lifestyle is shaken suddenly when the kids find a giant corn circle.

5/5 Excellent!

Story:
It's contaminated. That's what pint-sized Bo (Abigail Breslin) says about every glass of water that she tries to drink, then rejects. This is just one in a long list of strange occurrences that are changing the lives of the Hess family. Things go awry when Graham Hess (Mel Gibson) and his brother, Merrill (Joaquin Phoenix), awake early one morning to find the dogs barking and the children--Bo, and her brother Morgan (Rory Culkin)--wandering bleary eyed in the corn fields. They discover a pattern of perfectly carved crop circles left the night before. Trying not to overreact, Graham ignores the media frenzy that has permeated all television and radio stations, and even shrugs off the oddly familiar information that Morgan reads in his book about extraterrestrials invading earth. The real challenge for Graham is to find the faith he needs to pull himself, and his family, through this unexplainable series of events.
SIGNS is the long-anticipated film from writer-director M. Night Shyamalan (THE SIXTH SENSE, UNBREAKABLE), a suspenseful and uniquely chilling family story.

Comments:
Awesome movie!
Like in '' The 6th sense '' this movie gives you little by little , little clues as in the end how to defeat the invading aliens.

The pastors wife gets killed in a car-crash, he thinks she's just randomly saying stuff, when she's saying '' Swing Away '' & '' See '' .

Enjoyed this movie enormously, very mutch recommendable. A++++++++++++++++++
