Paperback . Tough read

A superb retelling of the author's part in building the R100 airship , and the inept building of the R101 . Read this book , and you will see that 80 years later , nothing has changed . Governments can't make anything properly!Read full review

For a book that cost 4p in a charity shop it was vastly overpriced at £17. The quality & condition of his book did not justify this level o price.

A very good book by this author.

Engineer turned Novelist

Hugely popular novelist of the post WW2 era, who wrote as a relaxation after his day job.
Trained as an engineer, he was involved with airship and aeroplane design in the pioneering days , when slide rules were the cutting edge of calculating the Stressing of aeronautical design .
Disillusioned with post war England he relocated to Australia, flying his own light aircraft.
Earned more from books and film rights than as an engineer

An old friend re-united with me.

I started reading this book in 1970, when it was easily accessible, but mislaid it during a move in 1972. I only read the first few chapters, but it was riviting then and is even better now I have read so mane oy Nevil Shute books and watched the amazing films spawned by those books. I am so pleased to finally be able to read about the man behind my favourite tales.Read full review

Engaging and informative

Novelist Nevil Shute subtitles 'Slide Rule' 'the autobiography of an engineer' and he details the successes and failures of his early aeronautical loves, as chief calculator on the airship R100 and as a managing director of his aircraft company Airspeed. A good informative read, and revealing background to his novels.Read full review

Slide Rule

A good read from a good writer telling of his experiences with the airships of yesteryear. I first read this book when I was at school and was as fascinated then as I am still. Highly recommended.
