Anyone for a pancake?

Yes this type of lens is described as a 'pancake' because of its compact size and it certainly makes an NEX type camera very pocketable. With a wide angle of view and great depth of field there really isn't any worry when it comes to focusing and this makes it great for those candid street scene type shots taken from the hip etc. OK so it's not razor sharp at the edges, particularly used wide open, but stopped down its plenty good enough in my opinion. Compact friendly, but...

In a nutshell: Only buy if found at low price.

A pancake option with a wide angle, it sounds good on paper. However, unlike the sigma 16mm, this wide angle is not very sharp and despite small size it isn't an upgrade from the 16-50mm kit lens in as far as image quality. It was never designed to be amazing in all fairness.

A relic of the first generation of sony mirrorless cameras, sony nex range. Some copies are faulty or are off focus, images are not very sharp at lower apertures, and has no image stabilisation.

The positives are the size... not much else... it can take nice enough images stopped down, it is small and discreet, af speed is normally acceptable. Suited to sony e mount aps-c camera, just a thing to leave in your kit bag.

Door the price, this lens is brilliant. It's wide angle and gives a nice shallow depth of field, and it's small enough to fit discreetly into your camera.

Works best when used with the wide angle adaptor.

This lens on its own is not worth purchasing if you already have the 18mm to 55mm zoom. It only becomes exceptional when used in conjunction with the wide angle adaptor, this makes the lens a true 16mm wide angle lens, also because the adaptor was designed to function with this lens, the image quality improves considerably. Good value wide option

Decent lens, good to have the extra width. Bought it to use with the ultra wide adaptor. That's a good combination, but the images are not especially sharp. Brilliantly compact and seems well made.
