4 STARS

A very dinky lightweight player with a awful toy like remote control. However the player it’s self and performance are top rate as most Sony players are. Having tried and played my first purchased 4K dvd, the picture is near perfect with deep blacks and nice colours, there are a nice array of features to use for both sound & picture. If like me you were a little concerned with what hifi’s claim of the sound lacking any depth or gusto compared to its bigger brother the x-800, fear not its inaccurate as having hooked the player up to a Sony Blu-ray home cinema system via the digital out output using a QED reference 0.75 mar coaxial cable it sound perfectly capable of handling the soundtrack with depth and conviction. Therefore for the price other than the lack of apps available which I’m sure will rise in the near future I can throughly recommend this player.
Just one other noticeable absence that may be of interest is there is no led display on the front of the player, I presume this is to save additional power function as so to improve the players performance.

Great item

I've just had this player a week so only have first impressions. It worked straight from the box and only setup apart from connections was to input wifi password and put batteries into the remote. I've chiefly used it for playing 4k films from You Tube and playing films from my local pc network. Both these tasks were carried out well. I must admit I haven't tried a disc yet (a bit of an overisght!). I recommend this player, though I did find it's quite a bit cheaper in EuropeRead full review...

Good 4K player

I was a bit skeptical to buy this player after reading reviews of 4k movies freezing but I didn't come across any such issues. Quite compact, easy to use and no issues with the quality of movies. Tested on 4K bluray as well as 1080p bluray movies. Tried playing 4k youtube videos and there were issues where the screen would freeze and I can hear audio. Upscaling is not great compared to my Sony XF9005 TV when I tested watching a movie via Plex. I decided to use it only for bluray movies. If dolby vision is important I would suggest you buy this or X800 would do.Read full review...

A Good 4K player

Works as good as any earlier Sony Blu-Ray player with the advantage of 4k. Dolby Vision is included but has to be selected from the menu. The remote is identical to my earlier player. I dont think it is noisy in operation but be aware the front flips down to load a disc. A bit pricy for that extra 4k capability.Read full review...

This is fine….

But it isn’t high-end or even mid-level. It is small, plasticky, given to the usual spastic ‘whirr, whirr, click, click, whirr’ dithering which characterises the abominable disc handling we have come to expect these days.
I had a Technics CD player in the 80s which would have embarrassed this device. Drawer came out instantly, soundlessly and was ready to play the disc in milliseconds and even with your ear on the casing you could hardly hear the mechanism spinning the disc.
Picture is fine, but DVDs are disappointing, soft, muddy, low res (and they aren’t on our Marantz blu ray player); Blu ray performance is good-to-very-good, without being superb; You get what you pay for and this wasn’t expensive, doesn’t make any special claims and now days you’d have to spend double to notice any worthwhile improvement, possibly more.
Recommended? Not particularly. It’ll do, but we see little evidence of ‘trickle-down’ - this is no better than it needs to be (although none of the alternatives are, either).
If you are serious, spend more, but don’t imagine you can do this on the cheap - most of these players feel like they fell out of a Christmas cracker.

Top quality machine

Very impressed with this device, very easy to use and change region for Blu-ray, and the DVD region switches automatically. The on board software is like our previous Sony player, simple and intuitive. The machine was unable to play some recorded Dvds from Japan, which our old Panasonic DVD player was able, I believe this is a codec issue, but aside from this we are extremely happy with this purchase.Read full review...

Good player but noisy.

Good picture and sound. Seven Worlds One Planet looks fabulous and even the annoying music sounds good. However, there is one big problem; the player itself is very noisy. During quiet spells the noise of the disc going round is very intrusive.Read full review...

Powerful, Exciting Little Box!

I bought this having read good reviews, and, having bought an ATMOS receiver, decided to take the plunge on 4k UHD, picked out some bargain 4k discs and this the cheapest Sony, as I'd previously had an S7200, which had been pretty good too.
Set up is a doddle, and I was soon enjoying the higher res of 4k video, and full fat 7.2.4 atmos with Nolan's Dunkirk, which while not atmos mixed, I found Sound and Vision, both superb, my old blu ray, an. Oppo 83SE, costing a hell of a lot more, was brilliant, and I didn't expect too much from this Sony, but for the money, it's a cracker. I then tried a couple of Dolby trailers downloaded to a flash drive, and was very impressed. I've played a couple of SACDs, and, again been very impressed crisp, accurate with authority across all frequencies. It is a bargain, it may lose out against the Pioneer or Oppo, but at a fraction of the cost, it represents greater value for money. Recommended without any hesitation!
