Hardly worthy of BIlly Wilder

Of all the Billy Wilder films that I have seen, I reckon this to be probably the worst. It may well have tickled the audiences way back when it was made, but the sort of humour it offers reminds me very much of that awful TV sitcom of the same era, called Sgt. Bilko. Fortunately this offering saves us from having to endure the insufferable Phil Silvers, and the canned laughter of the same era, but the over egging of the comedy makes Stalag 17 a rather heavy handed affair. There are one or two funny lines, but they are very much overlaid by the rather slapstick approach. Read full review
