EXCELLENT STANLEY BLOCK PLANE

I have never used a block plane before but this one made the task effortless! Sharp and easy to set up this is an excellent plane.

What has happened to Stanley planes?

First it looks good and has a nice heft to it. Beauty is only skin deep. The casting is dreadful, the soleplate is that concave if I threw it it would come back to me. So far I have spent nearly two and a half hours trying to get it flat, I am nearly there. This is a brand new 601 block plane out of the box. Come on Stanley get your act together and restore the once great name.Read full review...

Ghastly, cheap dross.

I have a Stanley 60 1/2 block plane from the 1960s. It is a good little plane. I use it almost daily as a carpenter. I wanted another for use at home so I ordered one which arrived very fast. It would seem however that the wonders of modern machinery and manufacturing techniques have been spurned by Stanley who have debased a once good item to one solely based on price and utterly unfit for purpose. The base was so coarsely ground that I could have used it as an emery board and so far from flat that when I put it on a surface plate it wobbled like a round bottomed doll. The throat was out of level so I had to file it to persuade the iron to sit flat across it. The iron as supplied was not square. The throat is too large and can not be closed to a small enough dimension for awkward timbers and the adjustable front sole is no longer made from cast iron as it used to be but a ghastly mild steel which does not respond well to machining.
All in all a dog.
Avoid it.
This plane is one sixth of the price of Clifton's block plane. I would if I were making the purchasing decision again gladly pay six times more to obtain an item fit for purpose rather than this cheap travesty.

Very good block plane, simple to use good quality materials used in its manufacture.

Can't be used properly as is.

Machining on the base is wrong.
The blade must be out to far to cut and dosen't allow for mouth adjustments.

Stanley 60 1/2 block plane

Not what I expected straight from the packet, I had to do quite a lot of work to the sole and the blade iron before it would work as it was intended.

I know it's cheap but it still has to work!

Needed a lot of work to get to a good standard. soul wasn't flat or smooth took a long time to get good with flat plate and sand paper. . Overall finish very average. not really suitable for any fine woodworking as it comes. Not really happy with product.Read full review...

Poor casting

Not worth buying this block planer.
The casting is very crude... spent 3hrs smoothing the base with sandpaper.
