A fantastic space shooter, but NOT for newbies

If you ever played the Wing commander games or any other flight sims from Origin systems like Privateer, then you'll probably enjoy Starlancer. It is not really the open-ended sandbox game that you get in games like Privateer, but it has the same gameplay dynamic to Wing Commander. Basically, you can play missions and in most cases even fail the mission and still continue the game. Your commanding officer though will give you quite a dressing down in the form of text though, and believe me, the Commander of your carrier will tear you a new one everytime you either fail a mission or are forced to eject. Even if you eject, you could potentially be captured by the enemy.

And by enemy I mean nothing but disgruntled Soviets in space. Well yeah, it's silly but it's still more probable than giant cats flying spaceships. Strangely enough, the alliance is every other race from Earth, including but not limited to Italians, Germans, Japanese, Mexicans, and so forth.

But I got to tell you this right now... this game is HARD. I mean you can basically select your difficulty but this game is damn difficult. One thing you really have to get used to is shooting down torpedos, targeting them and blowing them up before they hit their target, and believe me, this can be hard as hell especially when you have to shoot down like 10-12 of them in less than 2 minutes. Luckily, missions with this are few and far between and you're only faced with missions that hardcore about halfway through the game. In the first mission though you'll have to learn how to target Torpedos, and it's not that hard. It's more difficult to shoot them without the torpedo HITTING YOU!

Anyways, some funny stuff about this game. Unlike the Wing Commander games, you can no longer callously shoot down your wingman with little to no consequences. In this game if you shoot down any of your fellow wingmen, your co-pilot will zealously take control and say something along the variety of "Your ass is grass buddy, i'm taking you in!" Or "You're going to face a firing squad for that, traitor!". Then you get this FMV where you hear them shooting you. It's pretty cool actually, and doing something stupid like destroying something you're not supposed to in a mission will also get some funny over-the-radio responses from your co-pilot.

Starlancer is a pretty fun game. It will kick your butt though, so if you're gonna play it, you need skill, speed, but most of all... patience.

Great space shooter

This game has everything to offer for serious gamer but lacks in originality. The story is old and overused. Missions are always the same (save, protect, escort, defend) nothing changes. If you get all mission goals you will be awarded with a medal. Im still on level 7 but the game might get better. This is a must buy for dreamcast collection.Read full review...
