Having converted most of my old video collection to DVD I was thrilled to find this film gem in digital format. If you watch this in widescreen format, it really does the battle scene great justice; coupled with surround sound, you'll be gripped by the amazing cinematography. I would recommend the director's cut that includes scenes about the relationship between the lead character and his estranged wife and helps you to understand the motivation behind his decision. The run time is 183 minutes for the directors cut and 120 minutes for the cinema version. I was, however, disappointed by the lack of extras, which any fan of this classic would expect to be included. Starship Troopers

While there were many mixed reviews and feelings about this classic piece of film, some despising it as an action film with no point, others as a failed attempt at a comedy, i enjoyed starship troopers for two reasons.

The first was the action. Its everything we have come to expect from science fiction - large guns, larger alien monsters and hapless grunts being torn in two. The second reason is the political undertones. Blatant suggestions of the German nazi establishment are visible, with intelligence division wearing trenchcoats and heavy propaganda usage. Perhaps the best portrayal of this is the opening scene of the film, where a live news report of an arachnid planet invasion (supposedly going well) sees the reporter torn in two by an arachnid warrior, shortly before the cameraman himself is dismembered likewise.
