It's pretty fun, as long as you swallow your pride and play on novice.

The concept of the helper ship is pretty cool, but it does take some getting used to. Took me a while to drill it into my head that the little part with the wimpy guns is me and I need to make sure THAT part doesnt get hit, and stop paying attention to the big part.

There is slowdown throughout the entire game, so much that you start thinking that is the normal speed.

Having no checkpoints, including before the bosses, makes it extremely difficult for the casual gamer. You might need to play through the level a couple of times before you learn the boss's moves and stop getting killed.

If you play on the easiest mode (novice), you get to keep your guns when you die. I managed to beat it that way. Gave up halfway through on "easy". Cant even imagine the other modes.

A couple levels have cool music, but a few of the songs are just annoying.

Great, but not fantastic

Super R-Type is a great remake of R-Type II with awesome graphics, but the usual slowdown of SNES shooters. iRem evidently didn't know how to really leverage the hardware yet, and it shows, but it's still a fun time if you can deal with slowdown.Read full review...

Overall a great space shooter that is a must have for a SNES collection!

I played R-Type on a GameBoy long ago as a small kid, I loved it A LOT and was addicted to the awesome space shooter. But soon I lost the game (cause I'm that type of kid) and later in my young life I started to miss it.

But years later now since I'm 15 I found out it was on a SNES, considering the fact I had one I bought it on Ebay and my god ITS AWESOME.

PROS: Its just like how I remember it but BETTER since its on TV, colored, and awesome sound. Its a great addicting side scrolling shoot-em-up alien and spaceships. Awesome power-ups that really help you mow the incoming aliens, hundreds of different type of aliens, a true classic to play. Unlimited CONTINUES!

CONS: This game is just how I remember it, awesome but hard as HELL! Hit once you die, like every other shooter, but the enemy count on screen is seriously overwhelming so you better upgrade that spaceship if you want to stay alive or be dodgy.Read full review...
