Super Mario Sunshine (Nintendo GameCube, 2002)

A must on the GameCube

Super Mario Sunshine is a bit of an oddball in the Mario universe, set in a specific location, an an island, with Mario and pals actually on vacation. But the gameplay is all Mario, and it's some of the best of any Mario game. While i missed the variety of settings seen in Super Mario 64 or the Galaxy games, it's still a fun ride, and the excellent platforming keeps you want to push further and further into the game. While not quite the classic Super Mario 64 is, it's still a shining example of just what makes a Mario game great-- cool environments, genius level design, excellent gameplay, brilliantly tight controls, vibrant visuals, and a sense of fun that never stops. Straight outta 2002!

I didn’t have a chance to buy this back when it came out, and was the only “real” Mario game I didn’t own. I’ve put a few hours into it so far — the graphics are nearly 20 years old, and the controls feel a little wonky compared to modern PS4/XboxOne games, but it’s still pretty fun.Read full review

Really Great Game

Great Graphics, gameplay holds up.

The last good 3D Mario until Odyssey. Miss me with that Galaxy weird control stuff. Gimme a joystick and jump button. The graphics are phenomenal today, especially if you have a 480p HD GameCube. Bright and colorful as I remember from childhood, still rock solid gameplay mechanics, easy enough to get into and beat if you are a casual console player. Perhaps as classic a platformer as Super Mario 64

If you loved Super Mario 64 and/or any of the other "collectathons" for the N64 then you should love Sunshine. The mechanics are a little different (obviously you didn't have a hose/jetpack apparatus in any of those other games) and even things like the long jump are not possible. At the same time, though, the FLUDD gives the game a little something extra. And the general ambience of the game and all of its stages might be enough to warrant buying it. Just a whole lot of colorful fun. And if you still want to play some without the pack, there are a number of special stages that'll make you wanna throw your controller through a wall each time you misjudge a leap and Mario falls to his demise.Read full review
