TCT - The Who & Friends - Live At The Royal Albert Hall

I mainly bought this DVD because it features the god-like Noel Gallagher but there are another couple of gems on here too although in my opinion weird song choices disctract from making this DVD better than what it is. Like The Who themselves for example, the first track is "The Seeker" which is fine, it's a great tune and visually The Who still look as fresh as ever here. Then the last two tracks of the DVD are also The Who, first is "Baba O'Reilly" which again is a great tune so that is fine but the closer of the DVD is a song called "Tea & Theatre" which is an scoustic number and to me out of all the songs The Who must have played in that set this is an odd choice. But Noel Gallagher's performance of "Don't Look Back In Anger" is sublime and then Noel and the ever youthful and also god-like Paul Weller share vocal duties on the Weller penned song "The Butterfly Collector" which was originally a B-Side for Weller's first band The Jam but by no means sounds like a B-Side. Next up is the Kaiser Chiefs, I'm not there biggest fan but they put in a lively performance as ever although once again the track is an odd choice, "Take My Temperature" is chosen for this DVD, surely they played bigger hits that would have made more sense to include in this compilation. The Coral play arguably their biggest hit "Dremaing Of You" which is a great performance and shows what a great band they are and what a truly great track this is. The Cure play "The Kiss" but I didn't watch as I have no interest in the Cure. Then we have Razorlight and as Johnny Borrell puts it himself, "the legend that is Roger Daltry" (not sure why Johnny sounds american though? Maybe it's another of his personality's and ego's? Whichever suits what he's doing at the time he uses I guess) and they play "Summertime Blues" which is a very decent performance actually. The View play "Face For The Radio" which is quite a sweet sentimented song but once again I am sure they must have played bigger hits on the night. I skipped the next 4 tracks, I am sure I am not the only one to do so either. First of the unfantastic 4 is Bloc Party with "Like Eating Glass", then we have "Got To Let Go" by The Bees and I like The Bees but this performance will send you to sleep! Then it's something quite strange altogether, a guy called Gruff Rhys sings (I think he was singing anyway) a song called "Gwn Mi Wn" (very Welsh I suppose). The last of the poor four is Judas Priest performing "Hell Bent For Leather". After skipping those 4 though we come to THE stellar performance of the whole DVD! Better than Noel I hear you say? Well as the man said himself, Definitely Maybe! The performance I refer to the last song before the afformentioned Who songs that close this DVD and it is Kasabian. They play "L.S.F. (Lost Souls Forever)" and they smash it! The Royal Albert Hall is in raptures and they completely boss preceedings and as Serge says himself at one point, "This is like the last night of the Proms!" If you only buy this DVD for one thing then make sure it is for Kasabian, this performance just shows the quality of the and and what a rush it is too. Noel is great, Noel and Mr Weller are amazing and they were the reasons i bought this DVD but for the me the real stars are Kasabian, as they would say themselves, their performance is empire!Read full review...
