Old but sharp lens

Having had one of these before which finally gave out on me after 4 years i knew that at some time i would get another one I use it as a walkaround lens on my 70d and being F2.8 throughout is a very good lens for that job .
It will stay on that camera

Perfect lens !

- Build: excellent quality, feels more metal than plastic, great zoom ring, cheap manual ring, GREAT weight and dimensions for smaller bodies (t1i to 7d sized). Makes 18-55 look like a farce, betters 17-85 and sigmas. Most similar, albeit slightly inferior, to 17-55 and 15-85) but hood and caps are superior.

-Functionality: great zooming (smooth turning and ring feels great (dampened)), only 17-40L zoomed as smoothly imo, focusing system is so-so, it's cons being inconsistent precision, oddly placed manual ring/switch and some creeping in low-light. Most annoying sound of AF makes us forget it is generally very fast and efficient. Particularly for travel and casual shooting, I found the AF satisfactory. 2.8 aperture speaks for itself, it's amazing how it contributes to shooting options.

-Image Quality: Breathtaking, period. Even with strong expectations I expected less. Bright, crisp, sharp as tack, lush colors, you name it. Most impressive was this lens' sheer width (almost sure it goes to 16!) and performance from 17-35. CA, vignetting and barrel distortion all hardly an issue (unlike kit lens). A touch stopped down gives terrific corner sharpness!! IQ advantage over the competition was so obvious I could confirm it in the camera store. I couldn't believe how it easily outperformed Canon's 17-40L and 17-85 at the same aperture settings. Only the 15-85 and 17-55IS seemed to perform a touch better above 35mm (same apertures)

Excellent optical performance and sharpness. Highly recommended!!

This lens was purchased about 6 months ago as a higher performance kit lens for my 550D. The lens has provided me with consistently great results for both low-light group photographs which is my day job, and great landscapes as well. Sharpness across the entire image frame is excellent and better than the VC (Vibration Compensation) version of this lens. The lens has a solid, sturdy feel but without being too heavy.

Overall, definitely recommended for high performance on a lower budget than canon's L glass

Recomendo!Read full review...

Great product from Tamron

I have been very pleased with the lens. I bought this lens to replace the basic lens kit that came wit my camera body. Now I have been very impressed by this lens. The build quality is very good. You will notice that the mount is metal which means that it will be durable. The weight and hardened plastic construction gives in a good overall weight to stick on a body that may be large and heavy as well. The focus ring works the opposite way to a normal canon lens zoom ring which takes some getting used to but it's nothing major. The lens is boxed with a lens hood which is a rather cool petal shape and a lens cap which opens in the middle.

On first impression, image quality is high and exceeds the IQ offered by the basic 18-55 IS lens that canon bundles with its camera bodies. The 2.8 constant aperture is also very useful for shotting in low light conditions where a high aperture is needed. Although, I have never used a L lens by Canon, several reputable reviewers swear that the IQ offered by this lens would rival the Canon 17-40mm L lens which costs roughly double.

All in all, this lens offers excellent value for money, sharp images and a good overall focal length for a walkaround lens. The 2.8 aperture is also desirable which is useful for portraits and shooting in low light conditions. The build quality, whilst not of Canon L standard, is rather good compared to similar offerings by Canon is the non - L lens range. I would recommend this lens to those who are thinking of buying a third party lens and are in doubt or unsure of what lens to buy.

If you are into walkaround photography and in the lookabout for a walkabout lens, be sure to consider the Tammy 17-50mm and you will not be dissapointed.

Bargain lens even at retail prices...

Whilst trying to decide on a better lens for my 1.6 crop camera body from the Canon stable, I happened upon another review for this lens.

A good lens equals a good price, or should I say, a seriously good price. Big money normally has to be spent in order to obtain the crisp sharp results we all crave. Add this attribute to the fact that this lens also has a permanebt aperature of f/2.8 and you have a seriously useful lens.

Wide open this lens gives excellent results, images are sharp in the centre and remain pretty sharp into the corners. Effective in low light conditions, especially indoors and with an off-camera flash. This lens is comparable with the Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 in terms of overall quality, minus the image stabiliser. This is no joke...

Cost wise this lens is more than half the price if bought at new retail prices. So, in my opinion this lens is an absolute bargain with a really useful focal range and a lens that I would not hesitate to use for important shots wide open!

This is the 1st non Canon lens that I have bought so now I can use the saving to add to the next important purchase...

Superb image quality.

A good upgrade from the Canon 17-55 kit lens. The slightly shorter reach at the long end and additional weight makes little difference. The large aperture and sharper image make a huge difference.
Lack of image stabilisation hasn't been a problem so far.
The image quality is the best you will get from a zoom lens in this price range (or even up to double the price).
