Essential reading for anyone suffering from trauma related issues.

I'm three quarters of the way through this book, it is both a fantastic and compelling read. It gives a fascinating insight into the workings of the brain and how trauma affects those workings. It has tragic and sometimes frightening real life testimonies that have reduced me to tears at times, there are also paragraphs that are light bulb moments where you make sense of why certain things have happened or why certain behaviours are affected. It never ceases to amaze me as to how cruel human beings can be to one another and how that can leave a lasting legacy that can take years to surface. I know I'll finish this book and start it all over again as there is so much to take in. I would recommend the book to anyone who wants a better understanding of a trauma that may affect them.Read full review...

Good but only deals with the most extreme examples of trauma

It's good but unlike Peter Levine's 'Waking the tiger,' it tends to make the same points throughout the book and doesn't have the practical exercises that ,'Waking the tiger' has.

A compelling overview of psychiatry and psychology

This book has been recommended by trainers on my Cognitive Analytical Therapy course and EMDR training course. I have finally got round to reading it and it is easy to read and compelling, unlike most text books. It is a book that sums up practising psychiatry and psychology over the last 40 years. A really good overview and relates to my experience of working in mental health for 20 years. Mental illness is usually about trauma. That’s what we need to target. Read full review...

ptsd

If like me you have c-ptsd and have a need to understand the why's and wherefore's, this book is for you. I believe understanding a condition is key to recovery, or just finding out why you even react or behave in certain ways. I wanted to improve my quality of life and be able to make changes and have found this very interesting and encouraging.Read full review...

Great elaboration on trauma.

This book is one of the best books I have ever read. It elaborates so thoroughly on how trauma affects our brains, which in essence has a tremendous effect on our everyday lives, general human interactions, and current and/or future relationships. Excellent book and I highly recommend it to all whom personally have been through traumas (in childhood and/or adulthood), and those who are particularly interested in how human body works. I'd give this book 10 ☆ if i could.Read full review...

Worth every penny

Very happy with this purchase, recommended by my therapist. Content can be quite harrowing at times (read with many breaks and chocolate biscuits) but the way that the information is presented is so accessible and enlightening. It has changed my perspective on so many things. Read full review...

Best read on ptsd

The best book I've read on ptsd. The author's career is a walk through the history of psychotherapy.
I reccomend the hardback as it's easier on the eyes :-)

A lot of helpful experience shared.

Great for anyone with ptsd however, I've only read a small amount and scanded the book but seems mostly for those who had a single major trauma.whereas my ptsd seems to be related to multiple events building up.Read full review...

Best book I have ever read!

Currently on my 3rd reread- I work in mental health services in the UK, with a particular interest (for want of a better word) in trauma.

Paradigm shifting, fantastic book! I am an avid follower of all of Dr Van Der Kolk’s work!

Couldn’t put it down
