The Devil's Rejects (2006, Blu-ray Disc)

What can I say, I love these kind of movies! Don't you ever get tired of everything ending honky-dory? I do,sorry guys, life just isn't that way. So an occasional dark side of life movie brings it all back to it's proper perspective. Seen the first one (House of 1000 Corpses),loved it. I bought this because the price was right and I'm starting my new Blu-Ray collection. And,yes, I also buy the "happy-happy,joy-joy" ones also.
So, watch the first one then this one and you will enjoy them.

not just blood and gore

If you are thinking that this movie is just going to be like "House of 1000 Corpses" then you are wrong. I don't know what happened to director Rob Zombie between making these films but whatever happened worked.

This movie had a nice balance of character development, gore and story and a bit of comedy too. Some characters are just down right funny with crude dark humor. Such as captain Spaulding. Whoever doesn't laugh at him is a prude.

The story revolves around three murderers from the 1st movie. In the 1st movie the story just introduced them and showed them murdering people but in this 2nd movie it tells you a little more about the characters through development.

The start of the movie has you hating the characters but by the end you somehow start to feel for them and cheer them on. It's a strange concept that I have never really experienced in a horror film. I'm not even sure it should be called a "horror" film or "blood & gore" film. I'm at a loss at what to categorize this. Whatever it is it's good.

As for music...it's amazing. It's that old 70's rock type music that before the film I didn't appreciate. But within the context of the film it fit perfectly. You may not be a fan of that type of music but it's a good background to set the mood of the movie.

All in all I highly recommend this movie. For a die-hard blood & gore fan. They'll appreciate this movie but not think it's the best. But IMO this film was really developed for anyone that's mildly interested in horror films which worked for me. There's blood & gore, it's just not ridden throughout the film.

Devil's Rejects Best in Blue Ray

I waited to see the House of 1000 Corpses until it came out on HBO. It was reviewed so horribly that I didn't even want to waste my money on it. In the end, I was glad because I really didn't care for it too much. So, when Devil's Rejects was announced, I rolled my eyes and thought nothing of it. Until the decent reviews came in. At that moment, I thought, well maybe Zombie got his act together and maybe the new one will be decent. I should have waited for HBO again.

Really, I am the prime demographic for this movie. I'm in the low 20s, I'm a guy and I love horror films. I enjoyed the 70s horror gore flicks, the 80s stalkers and the more adult horror films of today (like Haute Tension and Saw are two that come readily to mind). The movies that are truly horror (because there are major differences between scary movies and horror movies). And, to Zombie's credit, The Devil's Rejects feels at times an homage to the 1970s gore flicks like TCM. Unfortunately, it's like he took the worst parts of those films and ignored the best.

At the heart, Rejects is a road trip movie about a family of serial killers. And the movie is mostly told from their point of view, with a couple of scenes as viewed by the obsessive detective. I'm not sure who is supposed to be the protagonists of the movie and I'm sure that that is the point of the movie. All of these characters become or are at the beginning all morally ambiguous or the antithesis of morality that I can't even begin to relate to them. So, when the killing starts, I'm so distanced from the movie that I don't even care. It's not suspenseful, it's not scary, it's just violence in the name of violence.

And it is here that I think Rob Zombie missed the point. The reason the first Texas Chainsaw Massacre was so effective in its horror was that we had a character we could sympathize with. Sally Hardesty was a sympathetic character so that when she was trapped at the hands of the cannibalistic family, when she's being chased by Leatherface and when her friends are all murdered in horrific ways, we feel the horror. When the Firefly family is tortured in the Rejects, I don't feel sympathy for them, I don't feel anything. It's just violence. And it's deserved.

And, for a horror film, it was incredibly boring. With only a few sequences that were horrifying or intense (the aftermath at the hotel involving the maid for instance) that were interesting, we are given boring and pointless dialogue, driving sequences and sequences of horrible acting. The whole movie felt drawn out that I was actually looking at my watch, waiting for it to be over.

The only really fun parts of the movie involved Sid Haig's Captain Spaulding. He was my favorite character in House of 1000 Corpses and he is the only shining light here. His grin filled with rotting teeth, his scary clown routine and his home life all provided the only source of entertainment in the Rejects.

Truthfully, I didn't have the highest hopes for this movie. I was willing to give it a chance based on some of the reviews I've read, and I hoped I would be pleasantly surprised. But, even with my low hopes I was still disapointed. It lacked some of the good things from 70s horror and took all of the bad. Instead of feeling like an homage to that genre and style of horror, it became a mess of a movie. In the end, I didn't care and I wasn't horrified by much of anything (hotel scene is about it) because for the most part, they all deserved it.

70's/80's Horror Flashback - Slasher Splatter Goodness!

All hail Rob Zombie! He is widely known as a big horror movie fan - as well as for his little career in music, you've heard of him?

This is a sequel to House of 1,000 Corpses but stands well on its own. I actually like it better. House of 1,000 Corpses felt too much like Texas Chainsaw with scenes playing homage to the slasher classic. The Devil's Rejects - great title! - also has the feel and look of Texas Chainsaw but is it's own movie.

Lots of gore, nudity and smart writing - do I need to tell you the plot? Baby Firefly and her brother Otis survive an ambush at their family home. Together with Baby's father (Sid Haige as the creepiest, nastiest clown EVER) they slash their way through Texas.

Highly recommended to fans of Tobe Hooper and 70's low budget slasher and splatter films.

BLOOD GUTS AND BOOKS WHAT MORE COULD YOU ASK FOR

I am all down for the blood guts and gore of movies but this one defiantly has an extra to it. BOOBS! There are more boobs in this movie than I think that you would see in a magazine now a days. I really love the beginning of this movie. The way that it starts out gives me such an adrenaline rush that kept me wanting to watch more. And the beginning is just one of many parts of the movie that gave me a rush. It is almost that way throughout the whole movie. The ending is the most awesome ending to a horror movie that I have seen yet. It is really a work of art, it was so awesome and I know that you are not suppose to cry during a horror movie but it was really sad. I mean Baby, Captain Spaulding, and her brother(cant remember his name) are just so awesome that is really just made me sad that they way that things just had to end for them. But they gave it all they had which is exactly what I expected to see. I would recommend watching this movie if you like blood, guts, and boobs; and if you just like a great movie all the way around.Read full review...

devils rejects blu ray

I bought this because I own a ps3 but dont have any blu rays. I enjoy horror flicks an saw this for cheap so I went for it. I enjoyed the movie but I think I should have picked something else to test out blu rays. This movie is filmed to look like a classi 70s horror flick so the lighting and such reflect that. It even uses intentional film grain at points. However, Im pleased with it either way. Lots of gore, lots of boobs.Read full review...

Probably Rob Zombie's most popular movie

Certainly one of his best, and oddly, one of his more grounded movies. This release looks and sounds great, definite upgrade from the DVD release.
