A haunting, evocative read.
A haunting, evocative read - describing the horrors of world war II in the Malay peninsula and the impact on Japanese, Malay and Chinese. Plus very enlightening on the design and ethos of Japanese gardens.Read full review...

hardgoing
time switches make this difficult (for me) to follow. Japanese , Malay etc phrases and words mean nothing without a glossary.

Amazing, interesting, alluring.
The book was more damaged, front cover very badly creased, which wasn't mentioned. But the actual read quality is amazing.

One of the best books I have ever read!
One of the best books I have ever read. A bit confusing at first with the changing time-lines, but really emotive, informative and well written. Asked if I would recommend it, well if you count buying several copies and sending them to my friends while sourcing my own private hardbacked version, then yeah!!! I usually don't read many novels (Paul Theroux - and all his travel books)I prefer informative literature and textbooks, but stuck on an island and run out of reading I chanced on this in a local supermarket. It must be fate at play, after much travelling in the East, this book explains so many things I knew but didn't really understand in their context.Read full review...
